Marian Costello Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2025.
Marian Alice Greenwood Costello was born on September 2, 1920, in Colwell, Iowa, and died peacefully at home on July 5, 2025, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She was 104 years old.

The oldest of four children, she grew up on her parents' farm in northeast Iowa. She fondly recalled riding to school in a horse-drawn school bus, outfitted with sleigh runners in the winter, and warmed by an oil stove over which students made popcorn. Among the many farm habits she continued throughout her life were drying laundry outside on a clothesline, making homemade soap, and eating seasonally. She knew when spring asparagus were due, when local strawberries would be available for pies, and where she could buy corn on the cob picked fresh from the field.

She attended the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota for two years, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1940, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. During her years in Iowa City, she broadcast news and radio plays on WSUI, one of several AM stations opened by Midwestern universities during the early days of radio, and still in existence today.

After World War II, Marian moved to Minneapolis, and made lifelong friends living in a big house with other young women who worked in the city. She was the executive assistant to the chair of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. She continued to promote Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota forever afterward.

In the summer of 1948, Marian met John Costello on a blind date at Interlochen Country Club in Minneapolis. They were married June 13, 1949, and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before John's death in 2011.

Marian and John moved their family to Bloomfield Hills in 1957, when John was transferred from Minneapolis to Ford Motor Company headquarters in Dearborn. In 1967, they moved into their house on Conge Drive, which they designed and built. For over 55 years, it was filled with family, friends, and delicious food.

The unique thing about Marian was the many connections she maintained with friends and relatives. She never owned a computer or used a cellphone, and rarely watched TV. Instead, she wrote letters, and talked with friends and family on her landline. Her door was always open, the refrigerator full, and there were homemade cookies, cakes, and pies in abundance. If you stayed overnight, your bed was made up with line-dried hand-ironed sheets and pillowcases.

As was her wish, Marian lived in her home until the end, feeding the birds (the rose-breasted Grosbeak was her favorite) and enjoying the passing parade of deer and many forms of wildlife in the surrounding woods.

Marian was a Silver Life member of The Village Club, and a founding member of the Bloomfield Republican Women's Club. Marian and John (alumnus) were active members of the University of Minnesota Club of Detroit. For over 20 years, she sold Minnesota wild rice to raise scholarship funds, and was honored with the Minnesota Alumni Association's Outstanding Friend Award. She was an active volunteer at the Meadow Brook Music Festival. She was a parishioner at St. Hugo of the Hills and St. Thomas More, and enjoyed Christmas services at The Academy of the Sacred Heart.

Marian is survived by her children, Elaine (Thompson) Potter, Robert Costello, Daniel Costello, Cynthia (Cimarron) Buser, and Michael (Melinda) Costello. Her grandchildren are Mary Potter, James Costello, Paul and Colette Buser, and Quinn and Jack Costello. Marian was preceded in death by her parents Maurice Almon and Mary (Riedel) Greenwood, her husband John Bernard Costello, her son James Patrick Costello, and her siblings Mildred Greenwood (Sr. Elaine), Maurece Bumbre, and Paul Greenwood.

A mass in celebration of Marian's life will be held at The Academy of the Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Road, Bloomfield Hills on Saturday, September 6th at 11:00am. The family will receive guests in the parlor at Sacred Heart beginning at 9:30am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial tributes be made to:

Mrs. Costello was a beloved lifelong family friend. My mom, Seiko Yee, continued to have lunches with Marian and put golf balls with John at Sacred Heart school grounds. We grew up on Kensington Road in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and my 3 siblings and I would attend her wonderful neighborhood parties for all of the kids with so many fun games (Twister, Boggle, etc.) and great prizes.

These were some of the best memories of my childhood as we spent much of our childhood working in our family's restaurants throughout the Detroit area. My mom told me that Marian and John attended one of our Lunar New Year parties at our Forbidden City restaurant in Detroit's Chinatown.

Mrs. Costello made the most fantastic Christmas cookies and Christmas wreath treats that we looked forward to and savored every year. And her wonderful lamb cakes for Easter.

I enjoyed sending her Christmas cards every year and letting her know how much the neighborhood parties and her friendship meant to us.

It was so wonderful to see so many of the Costello family and friends this weekend to celebrate her life and hear such wonderful stories of how she loved and cared for so many people.

Our condolences to the Costello family for the loss of such a very special person. We were so blessed to know her. She will live on in the hearts of so many.

I will very much miss talking to Marian about her faith, her love of family and friends. I once asked her why she didn´t have an iPhone or computer? She said, " if I did, I´d spend all my time on them. I´d rather spend my time taking my friends to the doctor or bringing them a meal." That was Marian! I will miss her.
My condolences to all that knew her.

We met Marian and John through their son Michael, a co-worker of mine at 3M. We connected right away as I was from Winona, Minnesota. Before we found a home Marian would have me over for dinner. When the family joined me in Michigan Marion invited us and our children for dinner. At one of those visits our daughter Nicole was invited to play the piano for the other families that gathered for Easter. The Costello´s became surrogate grandparents for Jim & Nicole.

Eventually I was transferred to the 3M St. Paul headquarters.

We continued to visit Michigan over the years. Marian insisted that we would stay at her home. Marion continued to send notes and cards and remembered sending me a birthday card every year. During one of our last visits Marion was interested in what my thoughts were on the Big Ten adding teams.

To say that she was a good Samaritan to people would be an understatement. She was a witness of the love of God and a disciple of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We were blessed by her friendship. Our love and condolences to the Costello family.

Our deepest condolences to the wonderful Costello family. Marian always projected a wonderful mother and a model matriarch. My God, who makes their own soap in Bloomfield Hills?
We had a chance to visit last October and reminisce about the "Yellow Rats". Her memory, wit and charm ever present while recalling embarrassing stories of Danny´s and my childhood.

They truly don´t make them like that anymore.

Mrs. Costello was one of the most amazing people I´ve met. She and Mr. Costello acted as our surrogate grandparents when we moved to Michigan away from family and their kind son (a fellow 3Mer) introduced them to my dad. They included us on Easter meals, tolerated my poor piano playing and delivered May Day baskets. As I grew older, Mrs. Costello shared about Hillsdale College, where I ended up attending and meeting my husband. Our oldest is a senior there. To say that Mrs. Costello left a legacy with many falls too short. She was the best of women-kind, loving, whip smart, hospitable, gracious, and so much more. Our kids loved meeting her at her home and when she came to MN. The world is a little less wonderful with her not in it, but we will take the lessons she taught and remember her always in our prayers. Sending our love to her family and may she rest in peace!

My family lived nearby, and Mr. and Mrs. Costello were wonderful friends to my parents. Mr. Costello let me hit golf balls when he was practicing at Sacred Heart, and Mrs. Costello always had a big smile for me and my brothers. The initial common link was that my mom received her Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota, so being a Golden Gopher likely put them in touch. But my parents always admired the Costellos and their kids. I think Elaine had to babysit the three unruly Lee boys, but she did it with the same big smile as her mom. I sent Mrs. Costello a note last year, and within a week, I had a return note. I will keep that forever.

Marian was the most amazing woman that I have ever met. Her kindness to my sister and I when our dad was sick helped us through a difficult time. We shared great dinners with her and Bob. It was a treat going back to her house to spend the night.
I always enjoyed writing to her and was thrilled when she wrote back.
Heaven gained an angel. I´m honored to have met her. She will be missed.
Lovingly, Tina Lambert

Dear Mrs. Costello was a lovely lady. Her sweet voice was so lovely to listen to in our phone conversations over the years and her notes were always a blessing to receive. A very special lady indeed. My prayers for Elaine and the whole Costello family.

I was blessed to do yard work for Mrs. Costello after her husband´s health declined. What started out as a job quickly turned into a lasting friendship. She never missed the opportunity to send an anniversary card or birthday card for myself or my three children. She always found time for my dad as well and invited us over for a home cooked meal and delicious birthday dessert in September for my dad´s birthday. She taught me to always wash my windows on cloudy days and shared with me her love for the Rose Breasted Gross Beak which I now love and enjoy watching at my own home with my children. She always had the most delicious chocolates and shared the most interesting stories. Not only am I glad I knew such a beautiful soul but that my children knew her well and loved her.
