Jean G. (Grote) Montgomery

LANCASTER, MA/NANUET, NY

Jean G. (Grote) Montomery, 94, of Lancaster, MA, formerly of Nanuet, NY, died Wednesday, December 12, 2014, in Oakdale Nursing Center, West Boylston.

She is survived by a daughter, JoAgnes Santangelo and her husband, Charles, with whom she lived; five grandchildren: Ingrid Hauck, David Subbotin, Bethany Ordung, Leah Santangelo and William Santangelo; and two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Sophia Hauck. Her husband of seven years, William B. Montgomery, died in 1956. The eldest of three children, she was the sister of the late Joanne (Grote) Kennedy and James Grote.

Jean was born in Vanceburg, KY, daughter of Myron and Agnes (Eberhart) Grote, and was raised there and in Georgia, North Carolina, and Connecticut. She attended Berea College, Berea, KY, before graduating from Columbia University, New York, NY, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy. She and her husband, William, then settled in his home state of Mississippi, where she found employment as an Occupational Therapist at an area Children's Hospital, working with children suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

Following the loss of her husband, Jean returned to Columbia University, earning a Master's Degree in Education, and for more than 30 years, worked as an Elementary School Teacher in Nanuet, NY. She then retired to Florida for several years, before relocating to Lancaster, MA, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, in 2006.

Services and burial are private. There are no calling hours. McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St., Clinton, MA, is directing arrangements.
