Marie Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 26 to Apr. 28, 2023.
Marie had a long life of 98 years and died peacefully in her home on March 23, 2023. Marie was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Julius and Henrietta Poschen. She was the loving mother of 4 children: Lynn, Mark, Timothy (deceased) and Mary Ann. She was affectionately known as "Gram" or "GG" to her 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She brought up her 4 children as a single mother in the 50's and not only survived but thrived. She sold real estate as a woman in man's world and her business acumen was second to none. Her real estate career spanned 50 years, starting in 1954 in Los Angeles and later when she moved to Santa Clara. Marie loved to travel throughout her lifetime and was able to visit all 7 continents. She walked among the penguins in Antarctica and got up close and personal with her favorite, the elephant, on her multiple trips to Africa. Memorial Mass to be held at St. Clare Parish 725 Washington St. Santa Clara11:00 a.m. 4/29/23. Reception to follow. No flowers please. Marie Dunn was always the life of the party. She knew how to live, and freely shared her infectious zest for life and laughter with all. I met Marie in approximately 2007 when I joined the "Hike for Health" hiking group out of the Santa Clara Adult Ed senior wellness program. Though probably the oldest of the group (you'd never know it) Marie was always the one I wanted to hike with because she was just so much fun to be around. As well as hiking every Monday we also took hiking trips that lasted 3-5 nights depending on where we went. One memorable trip was to Crater Lake in 2013. Marie and I were roomies at the CL Lodge. One day our guide planned a sunrise hike up Garfield Trail to commence at 6am. We'd be rewarded with a wonderful sunrise and hot chocolate at the top of the trail. Back in our room Marie and I decided amongst ourselves to get an extra hour of sleep, begin "our" hike at 7 a.m. and get a mocha at the lodge when we got back. As we made our ascent we kept encountering disgruntled hikers coming down who were freezing and disappointed that the hot chocolate never materialized. Needless to say we were doubly pleased with our decision when we saw the sun rise over the crater. Mind you Marie was 88 in 2013.

There are so many examples of the camaraderie, good times and sense of belonging I experienced from knowing and hiking with Marie. She was both wiser and younger than her years in body and spirit. Being in Marie's presence was a such a joy and I thank my lucky stars I was privileged to call her friend. Carol Garvey

Marie was an incredible woman. Russ and I will always remember her inclusivity to Lynn's friends. And we will always remember how she made sure the kids had activities as well as the adults. Teaching them golf and swimming. We admired her fearless travel exploits. May the angels hold her in their arms.
