Marie Harshbarger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 20, 2014.
Marie Elizabeth Harshbarger, age 93, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on November 18, 2014. Marie is survived by her four loving children, Karon, Greg, Mark and John. She is also loved by her daughters-in-law, Ellen, Dottie, and MaryBeth. Marie was blessed to have eight grand children; Michael, Carolee, Mark, Laura, Scott, Kaylin, Mike, and Evan and six great grand children. Marie was a loving mother and devoted her entire life to raising her children. She was an excellent example of motherhood and all of her children are thankful to have been hers. Marie also had a passion for gardening. She loved roses, azaleas, camellias and all types of flowers. In her later years, Marie knitted afghans for her family to keep them warm with her love forever. That they do. Marie will be laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park. The family will be having a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marie E. Harshbarger Memorial Account at any Wells Fargo Bank (to construct a serenity garden for a shelter).

I am so sorry to see that your mother died. I always sent her a Christmas card and when it came back this time as undeliverable I was afraid she may have died. It is sad to think all the Shaw aunts and uncles are gone now. It was nice that your mother made it back to Illinois before our mom died. It was good to see her.

I'm am very sorry for your loss. During the holidays we can, as families, remember all the fun, love and kindness we received from each other. Mother, Thelma, loved Aunt Marie and talked about her often. I'm glad they shared time together, now they have eternity to share their stories about us. We will miss them forever.

I never got to meet Aunt Marie and I'm sorry for that, but I got to know a lot about her from my mother, her sister, Thelma. Mother often spoke of Aunt Marie with love in her eyes and voice. I'm sorry for your loss. I am happy knowing Mother and Aunt Marie are together again. Caralee

I will miss my Aunt Marie so much. She and my mother (Thelma Marie Shaw Collins) were so happy when they could get to visit each other. She would come home to Miami, Florida and just be bursting with happiness. She just had to tell us of all the things they had done while she was visiting with her sister Marie. I was blessed with Aunt Marie's letters and Christmas Cards just brimming with love and affection. She always gave me the run down on all her children and grand children. I will miss her dearly!

Grandma,

I couldn't ask for anything more than to be a part of this amazing family you helped create! Thank you for always greeting me with your loving smile and for allowing us to have epic egg tosses in your front yard. Those were the best!

Your homemade blankets will always be scattered throughout my house. I'm actually using one right now.

Love,
Mark

Marie was a wonderful mother to our son in law, Mark. Fran and I became friends with her and enjoyed the years together watching our kids grow. She raised remarkable children, and she will be missed.

Dear Grandma,

Thank you for being the best grandma and friend! I will always treasure our times together. My brother and I looked forward to staying at your house and couldn't wait to see you. You always had a big smile and a warm hug waiting for us. You always took us shopping. You bought me dresses and my brother books. You always bought us a puzzle or game to play while we stayed with you. And, we always got to eat out at Carlos O'Brien's. I loved how you always had endless amounts of root beer (so my brother and I could have chug-a-lug contests), endless amounts of spaghetti-o's, endless amounts of klondike bars, and of course, endless amounts of love. Bed times were the best because I knew you would read to me from the Bumper Book. I loved the sound of your voice and only hope I read to my children half as well as you read to me. Thank you for sharing your scrap book, yearbooks, play books, and dance cards with me. I loved hearing about your train trips and adventures with grandpa. Thank you for introducing me to Judy Garland and Doris Day movies. Thank you for teaching me about plants and gardening. Thank you for still wanting to hang out with me once I was an adult. I feel so blessed to have been able to travel across the country with you as well as go wine tasting with you in Napa. You were so much more than a grandmother to me. You were my best friend. I love you.

Dearest Mother,
When I think of you, I think of lullabies and cookies, and roses and afghans. I think of a smile like no other and a gentle caress. I think of a mother and grandmother whose dream it was to make her children's "eyes light up". I am grateful for you and don't want to say good-bye. So I look for you in the stars. And I listen for you in my grandchildren's song. I will forever love you.

Dear Mother, Thank you for life. You always guided your family with honorable character, gentleness, and loving care. I am especially indebted to your love for gardening. Over the years as I planted my garden and trees, I frequently asked myself what would Mother think. Now as I walk under the canopy of the trees and viewing my many fruit and citrus trees, I can feel your presence. Love, Greg

Grandma,

Thank you for taking me to Carlos O'Brien's whenever I was hungry.

Thank you for sparking my love of mystery and books by reading me the *Hardy Boys*, and taking me to the bookstore to buy the latest edition of *Choose Your Own Adventure*.

Thank you for teasing my sister and I every time we would "ummm" and "aaah" after every bite of a Klondike bar, only for you to do the same whenever you would take a bite.

Thank you for the swing dance at my Uncle John's wedding.

Thank you for holding my hand while we'd look at the Christmas decorations at the Riverside Mall.

Thank you for an endless supply of Root Beer.

Thank you for providing all us grandkids a home away from home filled with music boxes and warm, homemade blankets.

Thank you for raising 4 wonderful children that have become the greatest mother and uncles one could ask for.

I love you,
Michael.

Her strength is her legacy....Marie raised 4 loving, caring, selfless children much like herself. She made this world a far better place through her committment and dedication of love to her family.. I am forever grateful to her and thankful to God that she was in our lives.

Dear Mom,

I know you are now in heaven and smiling down at us. I want you to know that I love you and miss you so very much. Your self-less love for all of us has been such an example for all of us to follow. You indeed held our hands for awhile and now you hold our hearts forever.

With never ending love, I wait until we hold each other again. Love Mark

When I think of my Grandma, Marie Harshbarger, I think of an incredibly strong and selfless woman who always put family first, never thinking or speaking of herself. She raised four amazing children and instilled them with lasting character and values that are hard to find in a world like today. They all turned out so well, putting family first... just like Grandma always did. She was a matriarch unlike any other. I am forever grateful to her for raising my Daddy to be the best man I've ever known and for leading a family as united as ours.

My fondest memories of her were around the holidays... her special Christmas cookies, her fruit/gelatin candies, her awesome easter egg hunts, her handmade quilted blankets to show her love, and snail races in her yard. She loved us so warmly and always made us know we were welcome in her home. She went above and beyond to decorate her house with Christmas decorations and always pulled out our most favorite toys (penguin stairs and slide) when we came to stay. We loved visiting Grandma Harshbarger!

In her later years, she began to open up more about her history with Grandpa, places she lived, and most fond memories. I cherish these memories so much, as i began to finally know more about Grandma, since she had always been so focused on all of us. She was an extraordinary woman who blessed this earth with her life, her love, and her impact. She will be missed, remembered, and cherished until we all meet again. God, please take care of Grandma H... she spent her whole life taking care of everyone else. - Kaylin
