Levelland - Marie Hart passed away in her home on June 22nd, 2024. Marie was born and raised in Erie Pennsylvania, but her life truly began in Philadelphia where she attended nursing school and met the love of her life, John.

After finishing nursing school, John joined the US Army, they both served at both overseas and stateside Army locations. Like everything she did in life, Marie threw her whole being into the supportive role she is so well known for in various aspects of her life, even earning the title of Army wife of the year while stationed at Ft Lee VA. One of the major passions of her life was travel, which she loved to do with her family both while in the Military and after. She and John travelled to Europe, the Far East, Australia, and Japan to name a few. If there was an adventure, not only could you count on Marie to be there, but to be the life of the party. While in the Army, Marie met friends she would have for a lifetime, and even after John's death she continued to travel with them to Cuba, the Caribbean, and China.

Marie always wanted to be a nurse and nursing was another passion in her life, being very involved with nursing associations including Texas Nurse Practitioners, Texas Nursing Association, and Texas Perinatal Association. If there was a cause, she embraced it; if there was an organization, she supported it. She led, participated, and encouraged others to be involved. She was a tireless champion of legislative activities to support women and healthy pregnancies. She worked in Levelland, with Rural Health, then in Lubbock with Texas Tech School of Nursing, and with Covenant Medical Center. She retired from Covenant Medical Group at the tender age of 81.

Though she at first resisted the idea of retirement, she quickly grew to enjoy it. Marie found new interests and drive with her church, Covenant Presbyterian. She served on the session and was active on several committees. Her service at the church led her to be involved with WTOS (West Texas Organizing Strategies) and climate activism, and even led her to lobbying for climate change in Austin.

Marie is survived by her three children, Lynne, Jay, and Beth. She is also survived by grandsons Patrick, Roarke, and Nickolas. She is preceded in death by her husband John, grandson Brendan, son in law Brian, and daughter in law Bobbie. She had an unusually good relationship with her children, and grandchildren, travelling with them as well. She spent every holiday, most weekends, and some weekdays with her family. She insisted that she host most holidays. She was not just a mother, or grandmother, but a mentor, role model, best friend, and confidante.

Marie loved the color purple (the color, not the film), going to movies with friends, hosting parties, shopping, her grandsons, drinking at the beach, shopping, her pool, dressing up, coordinating her glasses with her outfits, shopping, activism, her rescue dog Ginger, and the Santa Fe Opera. She hated being called Granny, cursing, and swimming in cold bodies of water.

Services are at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wednesday June 26, 2024. Viewing is from 10:30 to 11:30, and services are at 1200, followed by burial at City of Levelland Cemetery.

I met Marie in 1976; my good friend Brian was dating Lynne. She was always welcoming and folded me into family dinners and such. Her ability to put together events, dinners and such was exemplary. She always made Judi and me feel like part of the family. As the obituary indicates, she was quite accomplished, never did anything half way in anything she did. Condolences to the family. I do think there are a lot of great memories and in that way, she will always be part of your life.
