Marietta Coleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2017.
COLEMAN Marietta Emmons, 87, wife of Dr. Robert Emerson "Clem" Coleman, died Jan 3, 2017 at her residence in Wilmore, KY. Born May 17, 1929 in Lancaster, OH, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Mary Heigle Emmons. Mrs. Coleman was a 1948 Asbury College graduate and spent her life in partnership with her husband in ministry for 27 years in Kentucky, 18 years in Chicago, and 8 years in Boston before returning to Wilmore. They traveled extensively throughout the world. She was passionate about creating an open home. This witty, pool loving, ice-cream eating, coupon hoarding, Jesus serving woman invested in people advising, encouraging, sharing wonderful meals and entertaining thousands of friends and travelers. Her life was a testimony to a love that gives meaning to the endless ordinary tasks she did for others. She is survived by her husband and three children, Alathea (Jim) Blishcke, Midland, TX, Angie (Dr. Lawson) Stone, Wilmore, KY and Jimmy R. (Shirley) Coleman, Augusta, GA; ten grandchildren, Whitney Blischke, Zachary Stone, Hannah Stone Wegmann, Lyman Stone, Dr. Juliana Colemen, Dr. Joshua Coleman, Elijah Coleman, Isabelle Coleman, Abram Coleman and Sophia Coleman; and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1:30pm Mon, Jan 9, 2017 in Estes Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary, 204 N. Lexington Ave., Wilmore, KY 40390. Burial will follow in Wilmore Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30pm Mon at Estes Chapel until the service time. Memorial contributions are suggested to the One Mission Society, P.O. Box 1648, Monument, CO 80132-1648.

It´s hard to believe you have been in heaven for six earth years now. Your warmth, hospitality, and love are dearly missed. We will all see you again!

I always remember her laughing when she would introduce herself to others as "Mrs Master Plan". She read Pilgrims Progress to all three of our daughters and truly was a tremendous example of a godly Ambassador for Christ to us all. She will be missed -- and I looked forward to seeing her again in God's presence!

I am seeing that my entry here will be much like the others, filled with details about food, fun and fellowship! Her generousity was boundless! Surely, we were her favorites!!
My husband and I courted in their home. She mentored me and lovingly but in a no-nonsense way let me know when I was off track. I learned so much from her! It is hard to think of Wilmore without her! I know she is enjoying Heaven !

The world has lost an amazing woman. Our lives intersected when we were at TEDS and Marietta poured into our lives during those years and beyond. She was an incredible influence to our family! She continued to love us well even flying to Romania to be with us for a visit. She was known in our home as "Grandma Coleman". One of our favorite foods are known as "Grandma Coleman muffins"! She exuded warmth and love, being real and drawing people to Christ through her hospitable and fun ways. We are just one of many families that she touched. Her influence is far reaching and eternal.

I have such great memories of this "can-do" woman. Her enthusiasm for continued learning inspired me. She had a great love for children and loved helping the underdog. I will see you in heaven! Susan Eclov

The world has lost a great woman in Marietta's homecoming. She was so sweet and kind. One time, I called their home around 9:30 am thinking they would be awake from jet lag after a trip to Asia. They were sound asleep and I woke both she and Dr. Coleman up. She answered the phone with great sweetness, then I told her I felt bad for waking her up. Her response, "No, you should feel good!" And promptly went back to sleep. Marietta loved and cared for thousands in her lifetime and I was privileged to be one of them. I will miss you much dear Marietta.
