When I think of Marietta I recall many good times we shared at St. Ben's as friends and then roommates. Meeting up with her as she finished off lab work in the science building, grabbing dinner at the Loft (we both enjoyed the hamburgers and milkshakes) baking oatmeal cookies together, playing water polo at the pool, and just plain hanging out together are memories I will always treasure. Marietta made the world a better place not just because of her intellect but because of her genuine love of family, friends and life. I am thankful for the gift of her friendship.

I am honored to have known such a wonderful and amazing woman, Scientist, Professor, Mentor and Friend! Marietta was both my undergrad and graduate Chemistry Professor! Because of this wonderful, highly intellect and giving woman/Professor, I was able to graduate with my Master's Degree! Marietta was just an awesome part of my college experience! She was one of the Professors that would allow my children to sit in on a lecture so that I didn't miss class when needed! Upon meeting my 3 kids, she immediately recognized my challenges! Marietta was not only a role model, she was a pillar of strength and support mentoring and encouraging me through my entire 6 years at UMB! Marietta made learning Organic Chemistry fun and made it challenging! When I was her teaching assistant, we had a lot of laughs when it came time to grading undergraduate exams for she always loved challenging her students with her tricky but not so tricky organic chemistry problems! Marietta's energy was astonishing! While inspiring and advising me and many other students academically for years, Marietta expanded her responsibilities and took on more roles at the University always working and helping to improve the University! I hope one day I see a wing at UMB in a brand new Science Building, "Dedicated to Dr. Marietta Haeg Schwartz" for all of your hard work and 30 years of utter dedication! You were there when I graduated with my Undergrad and Master's! You were there for me when I lost my 26 year old son, Paul! You were there for me when I lost my two elderly pups! I THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and soul for all that you have done for me and my family and being there for me! Because of you, I was able to make my children's life better! Thank you to your Mom and Dad for they did a great job raising such a remarkable woman and human being! Cherish all of your precious memories and please take it One Day at a Time! Lots of Love and prayers!

You're the reason why I was able to ace Organic Chem in undergrad. God knows what a mess I was during that time, and you really helped me get through that. In the end I graduated as the department's honor graduate, and you most definitely played a role in that. This is something that will never be forgotten. One thing that I'll always remember (though seemingly small to some I suppose) was in my senior year. You wrote down on paper "unionized" and asked me how to say that. I said "un-ionized" and that seemed to give you a really good laugh. (For anyone else reading this who doesn't quite get that, most people apparently read it as "union-ized".) You told me that how you knew I was a real chemist. The support you gave me throughout my time at UMass will always be treasured.

You were very well respected by the veteran community at UMB. You really helped a lot of us out in countless ways, well beyond things like classes. At the Vet Center, when we knew someone was having an issue that you'd have some level of influence or say in, we'd be sure to drop your name. "You need to talk to Dr. Schwartz. She'll ACTUALLY get this fixed for you. If not, she'll know what you need to do if it's something on your end."

It was really neat when you found out that I was involved in scouting too as an Assistant Scout Master, as my name popped up on the Merit Badge University list. You randomly let me know during a review session one day. After that day, I always kept a lookout for your troop when I'd attend the various council events and campouts going on throughout the area, just so I could bug you for a bit. I'll still keep an eye out for your troop.

Thank you for playing a role in the success that I've been able to achieve in my life today. You're an amazing person and will be missed dearly.

Though I only knew Marietta through the Food Pantry Board, I recognized immediately her warmth, her dedication to serving others and her obvious intelligence. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

I served with Marietta on the Odyssey Day School board of directors for many years. Despite her busy schedule as a full-time member of academia, she always generously gave her time, her energy, and her love to the school. I admired her tremendously. What a loss to her family and the community. She lived a good, and purposeful life, cut too short.

Dearest Haeg and Schwartz families,
We are holding you all in our hearts. So sorry to hear of Marietta's battle, and such a premature loss in her passing. She was an amazing woman. It is a loss to all whose lives she touched with her kindness, brilliance, friendship and love. In profound sympathy, The Buford-Wigney family

As her brother, Tim, said recently to one of us,"Your family is my family, my family is your family." So we miss Marietta lots and would like to wrap our arms around Dick and Eileen and cry with them. We met Marietta when she was young and precocious and bookish and learning to bake cookies. She endured her boyish brothers with grace and aplomb. She took her turn milking the family cow and churned butter. She helped butcher the family pigs and chased the little ones around the house with a pig snout arranged like a puppet on her hand (use your imaginations). She may have been holding a book in the other hand and reading while she conducted the puppet show. We watched from a distance as she went to college and grad
school and off to Boston and academia. We looked forward to her visits home so we could hear her stories and eat the cookies she baked. Then we looked forward to her sons visiting their grandparents so we could hear their stories. She probably didn't know it, but she enriched the lives of the old neighbors who lived in Collegeville and looked forward to her visits home. Dear Marietta, we will miss you. We will do what little we can to comfort your parents and your brothers. Mark and Susan McKeon

Dear Marietta, you are missed by so many. Students, friends, faculty, family, colleagues...we all cherish our time with you. You were an inspiration to many women to become chemists and one of the nicest people I'll ever know. May you Rest In Peace..

We are so very sorry for your loss.
Marietta grew up in the house next door to ours. She and her brothers spent many happy hours playing with our children. There was a well-worn path through the woods between our homes as the children (and adults) of both families traveled back and forth. It was not unusual to see Haeg children playing in our sand box or with our toys. However, Marietta mostly preferred reading our books. When she had read every book at her house, she would come to our house and read the books here.
She went on to become a great scholar. She was so intelligent and so beautiful and a good friend. We will miss her and always remember her.

Marietta clearly lives on in the hearts of many who suffer so painfully her loss. Mysteriously God needed her even more urgently and relieved Marietta of her suffering in her battle of life. We pray for her and her families, Dick and Eileen, and brothers and sons, all. Roman Paur OSB, Saint John's Abbey, Collegeville.

It is a sudden shock to lose such a good person. Marietta was a leader of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society for years. It was a privilege to know her and share her cheerful style of work.

Marietta was a very warm, welcoming soul. Marietta was one of my first friends when I first started working with NESACS. We talked of many things that we had in common. She was always so "real". I have missed seeing her over these past months and will miss her smile and caring ways. May her memory be a blessing.

Professor Schwartz was an incredibly caring member of the UMass Boston community. She worked arduously to both mentor students and develop the science programs to benefit students like myself. Our current and future success as scientists is a direct testament to her works in teaching, curriculum development and advising. Sending my sincerest condolences. -Alex Winnett (UMass Boston, Biochemistry, 2016)
