BROCKTON — Marilyn S. (Boldt) Caffrey, of Brockton, 78 years, died July 9, 2008, at St. Joseph Manor, after a period of failing health.

Born and raised in Erie, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Fred J. and Alma (Mattson) Boldt. Marilyn was the wife of the late Richard N. Caffrey and had been a resident of Brockton since 1952. She was the first woman to be appointed to the Brockton Housing Authority and had been director of Elderly Services for more than 20 years.

As a testament to her commitment to the elderly, in 1972 in her honor, the elderly high rise on the east side of Brockton was appropriately named Caffrey Towers. In the early 1960s, she was named Mother of the Year and also received the City of Brockton's Good Neighbor Award.

Marilyn was on the board of directors for the Brockton Hospital, Old Colony Elderly Services, United Way, Council on Aging, Red Cross, Brockton Visiting Nurse Association, Old Colony YMCA, Southstate Bank for Savings, Old Colony Hospice, The Dorn Davies Senior Center and The Edwina Martin Recovery House. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, avid reader and championship bowler.

She is survived by six children, Richard E. Caffrey of Bourne, David J. Caffrey and his wife, Sandra, of Brockton, Diane E. Wallace and her husband, Timothy, of Brockton, Noreen E. Prime and her husband, Douglas, of Bridgewater, Nancy A. Braverman and her husband, Steven, of Medfield, and Kara L. Caffrey of Davenport, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Amanda and David Wallace, Darwin and Joseph Caffrey, Sarah, Robert and Jonathan Prime, and Jessica and Scott Braverman; a sister, Lois Semrau, of Erie, Pa.; a brother, Frederick Boldt, of Harlingen, Texas; brother-in-law, Jerome Caffrey, of Pocasset; and eight nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Phyllis Boldt.

Funeral will be held from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St., (Route 123), Brockton, Tuesday, at 8 a.m. Funeral Mass is in Christ the King Parish/St. Colman Church at 9 a.m. Burial is in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Visiting hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Just heard about your mom. I'm so very sorry. I worked for her in the 70's at the BHA, and had bumped into her over the years at the Y. She certainly had a passion for her work and a zest for life-always upbeat, caring, and making a difference. She will be sorely missed by all. I feel privileged to have known her. May your memories give you comfort.

To the Caffrey Family,
Your Mom will alway live on in our hearts and memories. For me I will always remember the great times My Dad (Bernie Lanoue) and I had enduring the cold and the Steve Grogan years at all those Patriot games!
She was a true friend to our family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Marilyn was the nicest person to my mother when she became disabled and needed to get into affordable elderly housing. She really went "above and beyond" to help my mom. I worked as a home health aide for a while and all my clients had wonderful things to say about Marilyn. She always had time for a smile and a hello no matter how busy she was.
My deepest sympathy to your family.
