Marion Morikawa Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2025.
Marion Misao Morikawa passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025 in Pukalani, Maui. She was 103 years old.

Marion was born in Kaupakalua, Maui on September 11, 1921 to Kisoemon and Tane Hamasaki. She graduated from Maui High School and worked at Kress Store in Wailuku. After World War II, she married returning veteran Samuel K. Morikawa and lived in Paia and Pukalani.

She enjoyed taking care of her family and went to work as a cook at Paia School and Maui High School, Hamakuapoko and Kahului, until she retired in 1977. For many years she took care of her grandchildren and drove them to after-school activities. She was a member of Makawao Hongwanji, attended services on Sundays, and was one of the "kitchen ladies" for 40 years.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends to 442ndArmy reunions and church conventions. Travels took her to Europe, Asia and mainland destinations, especially Las Vegas.

Marion is survived by her son Lyman (Marilyn) Morikawa and daughter Lynn Pilarski; grandchildren Robert (Jennifer)Morikawa, Kendrick Morikawa, and Alyssa (Ryan)Kiewel; great-grandchildren Jason and Dawson Morikawa; sister Harriette Hataye and sister-in-law Charlotte Hamasaki. Predeceased by husband Samuel Morikawa, granddaughter Susan Morikawa, and brothers Kiyoshi, Norman, and Nobu Hamasaki

Thank you to Ohana Care Maui and Island Hospice who helped care for Mom, and to the many relatives and friends who visited and supported her through the years. Mom always had a smile on her face, an encouraging word for everyone, and showed appreciation for all the blessings of her life.

Memorial services will be held on May 10, 2025, Saturday, at Makawao Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. Service begins at 12:00 preceded by visitation at 10:30. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers or "koden" monetary donations, the family suggests donations to Makawao Hongwanji, Nisei Veterans Memorial Center or a philanthropy of your choice.
