Lt. Col. Richard F. Doody, U.S. Army Retired, age 86 of Spraggs died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Family Hospice and Palliative Care in Mt. Lebanon.

He was born February 17, 1926 in Waynesburg, a son of the late Joseph and Mayme Shock Doody.

Lt. Colonel Doody was a graduate of West Point in the class of 1952. He retired from the U.S. Army after a distinguished career of 27 years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and multiple other citations.

Following his military career he was the Director of Maintenance at Mayview State Hospital for 15 years. He later owned and operated a mechanical maintenance company in the Washington D.C. metro area. For the past 20 years he was a gentleman farmer at Spraggs.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church at Waynesburg. He was also a member of the Elks, Moose, V.F.W. and American Legion all in Waynesburg.

Surviving are 3 sons, Kevin Doody (Joyce) of Mt. Lebanon, Timothy Doody (Anna) of Ashburn, VA, and Patrick Doody of Maryland; a daughter, Christine Van Deysen of Florida; a step-daughter, Laura Hern of New Mexico; 6 grandchildren, Katherine, Colin, Megan, Kyle, Rebecca, and Craig Doody; 2 brothers, Robert Doody (Delores) of Waynesburg, and Dr. William Doody, of California.

Deceased is a brother, Joseph Doody.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg where brief prayers will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church 232 E High St., Waynesburg, with Rev. Richard Thompson officiating followed by burial at Greene Co. Memorial Park with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 330 and the U.S. Army. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hillman Cancer Center.

The Colonel was kind, respectful, witty, and a true gentleman. I consider myself blessed to have known such a wonderful human being. I extend my sympathy to Kevin and his family as they cope with such a tragic loss. There is an Irish star shining down on all of us from heaven.
