BOONE, N.C. - Marjorie Gilliam Garrett, age 89, of Boone, passed away Saturday evening, February 6, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center. Born October 17, 1926 in El Dorado, Arkansas, she was a daughter of the late Surrey Edgar and Marie LaGrone Gilliam. Marjorie was a homemaker and a founding member of the Unitarian Church of Augusta, GA. She enjoyed traveling, especially to France. Marjorie was a volunteer with the Arkansas Opera Guild, the Augusta Symphony and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She was also a volunteer at the Conway Library. She is survived by her children, William Jett Murphy and wife Elizabeth of Fleetwood, NC, Andrew Gilliam Murphy and wife Deborah of Aiken, SC, Julia Ann Rummans and husband Fred of Hilton Head, SC, and John Robin Murphy and wife Beth of Nashville, TN. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and her former husband, William R. Murphy of Aiken, SC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert LaGrone Gilliam; her second husband, Ele Wyatt Hicks; and her third husband, Alfred Garrett. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Symphony Orchestra Augusta, PO Box 579, Augusta, GA 30903. Services for Marjorie Gilliam Garrett will be private.
