Mark Benjamin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2024.
Mark Paul Benjamin was 42 years old. He lived on Chapdelaine Road in Brownington, Vermont. On September 21, 2022 his life was taken in a cowardly and cruel act of gun violence. Mark was a funny, kind, generous and loving man who made our world a better place. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and his dogs. He worked to make his dream a reality, building his own salvage yard and repairing the cars. He was a caring and compassionate man, who loved to laugh, make other people laugh and possessed an infectious smile. Mark was survived by his husband Richard, his loving family; mother Susan, sister Julie, brothers Joshua and Jason, and his dear and true friend Casey Langlois. Marks passing was preceded by Grampa Lane and Homer Tinker. In 2022, Mark was cremated and presented to his husband. Two years later in 2024, Mark's remains were passed on to his mother. On her property, there is a marble memorial stone in memory of Mark, our "BELOVED"

Mark and I did everything together with his grampa he was a very greatful man who cared about his family and would always help someone in need. He had always wanted his selvage yard and he was successful in building that. He would always know where to find things that people would throw away yet if you needed something he would have it or locate it quickly. His talents were many Mark of all trades. Want to thank the many people who have shown me how much he did to help them. As his mom he was always smiling and I deeply miss him.Grampa got a new scooter and was pulling his grandson around to give him rides!

My favorite memory with my brother was from our childhood. In winter the snow plows at Sharon elementary school always plowed the snow in one huge pile in the parking lot. At recess all the boys played king on the mountain and Alan Aldrich was the biggest kid on our playground so he owned the top undisputed. My brother had a cast on his arm and I had a plan. I told Mark to go up the backside of the mountain and hit Alan in the head with his cast, all while I distracted him on the front. Mark got to the top, hit Alan with his cast and won king of the mountain. Watching my brothers happiness still puts a smile on my face today. He was the only one to ever win king of the mountain. I miss my brother but have his memories and those always put a smile on my face.

My first memory of Mark, I Was sitting in the top yard at the front of the building enjoy the fresh air and getting out of the open dorm for a minute. When looking down the little hill, to the top walkway came a young man around my age. His clothes were a bit oversized and he was wearing a gray'ish sweatshirt under his shirt. He had caught my interest standing at the main gateway to north dorm, talking to someone he just called over. He was about my higth, Medium build, dark blond to brown hair that was cut nicely and cute. Couldn't tell his eye color but it seemed dark. he was attractive to me, though the chances of me seeing him again other than inpassing was low, and talking to him was not nonexistent.
The next time I saw him was when he was moved into the dorm, the cube next to James Bretze who was a guitar player on the praise team. I was a singer and stopped by for a minute to talk to James, and Mark popped his head up out of this locker and James introduced us. It was the first time we talked to each other and James pointed out his wood craft he was doing and mentioned that I had figured out a way to make flowers. Mark jumped on that, loving flowers himself but making a project for someone he wanted to buy some of mine to use and figure out how to duplicate them. I brought what to his cube and I sold him one or two and talked about how I made them. I couldn't hang out with him for long, I didn't want to cause him trouble. He seemed realy nice and was happy to talk to me, and his eyes were brown.

His smile and the fact he would never slow down. He stopped to look at my car over 15 years ago and when he offered to give me a hand it was running. I tried to pay him and he refused. After that we became good friends and I will always think of the kindness that he offered others. I am grateful to know that some people are still as wonderful as he was. I could share so many memories of things that he tried to teach me. I miss him so terribly. Prayers for his Mom, Sister, and for Casey and all the rest of the family and friends who knew his kind soul.

I think it was Robbies birthday and Mark wanted to do something special for him. Robbies brother James was thair with us, so Mark made a plan. Robbie was Mark Boyfriend'ish at that time and Mark asked me to help buy the meal for them. So for Mark and leftovers I said yes. I wanted Mark to have a good time and Robbie and James to spend a time together enjoying a meal but i wasn't there friends at that time, James didn't like me and Robbie was growing more jealous of Mark showing attention to anyone but him, especially me. Back to the meal Mark did most of the prep work but I was asked (assigned) to help a little. The meal was taken up to the front table for them to enjoy, I was back in my cube working on some wooden rose. After about 5 minutes Mark came back to get me. He wanted me to come up and got them to agree to me joining in the meal. I protested at first but Mark got me to come up and join them. Mark tried to bring people together, he was kind and noble, i believe it was his plan all along to have me join them, and help us because better people. Thank inpart to Mark effort, James and I became friends. Mark was a peace maker and my rose.

Another time, Mark an I got a package sent from his and my mothers, full of Native American and various crafting supplies. I was better at sowing and woodworking but Mark made some very nice necklaces of different materials and gave me one, but the object I cherish the most is the matching friend ship bracelet he made for us, and he gave to me before he left to go back to Vermont. It was the last time i would see him in 12 years. Mark was my friend, and I loved him.

Mark was so creative and loved including other, at one point he decided we should build rawhide drums. Mark was part of the Native American community and invited me to be a part in the local circle. His mother Sue helped an sent the circle in rawhide for the drums. We build our wooden frames at our own cubes. I decided to use my popsicle crafting supplies, Mark large wood peace he had set aside. When we were finished with the frams, having never used rawhide before, Mark had to show me how to work with it, cutting and punching holes. Then taking the part's and soaking them in water baths to make them workable, we spent hours together in the Chapel Office. Myself bing a over achiever, Mark had to helped me with my lashing.
I will always treasure the time we spend together, and my drum reminds me of Mark inclusive nature, thank you Mark for inviting me. On dry days or warmed by a fire, the drum still sounds as good as when we made it 16 year's ago.

I never met Mark but from his photo, he looks like such a kind and compassionate soul. My heart breaks for the senselessness of his death and the shock and trauma it surely has caused all those who knew and loved him...my prayers and sympathy continue to go out to his beautiful Mom , Sue and her family and of course Marks husband as well. May you always remember and feel the energy of his love.

Sue stated that Mark first word was "Me". It was around 15 years ago and Mark asked me to help him print out some Christmas cards. So we met up and made the cards he wanted. He took the first one printed and began writing, I payed no mind and focused on the printer. We took the printed cards and started folding them all, and got finished up to leave. Then unexpectedly, He hands me the first card back saying, thank you. I read what the has written moments before, and say Yes, and we huged. Mark signed the card "Love Me". About 10 year ago I put that card In a frame with his pictures hopping one day to show him that i still and always will love him. I will always cherish it, Thank you Mark.

Mark was a loyal and honest man who would help anyone in need. He always made sure that he took care of grampa and his family. Losing my son who was always the glue has been very difficult. No words can explain the hurt and pain that I feel knowing I won´t see him again walk through the door I know he is near and going to walk through the door with his smile I know he´s here guiding each day. I love you Mark forever in my heart love Mom.

I only met Mark a few times, but I know his mother, Susan. She thought the world of Mark and wasn´t bashful about showing it. They were more than mother and son; they were pals, best friends to each other. His loss is immeasurable. Until we meet again . . .
