Mark Burton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2011.
BURTON, Mark Suddenly, on Monday, August 8, 2011 at the age of 21. Born on August 3, 1990 in Ottawa. Mark was the loving, and loved son of Penny and Bob Burton, and a wonderful brother to Tara. Mark was an exceptionally bright and talented sailor, musician, actor, lifeguard, swimming instructor, and student. He had a passionate interest in psychology and political, economic, and world affairs. Mark's capacity for empathy towards others who were hurting or in need of a friend or a hug will be remembered by all of us who love him. Mark's passing has created a huge emptiness in the hearts of his family and extended family. He leaves behind many friends who miss him dearly and treasure the time they had with him. Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 2370 St Joseph Blvd, Orleans, Friday, August 12th, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service at the Orleans United Church, 1111 Orleans Blvd at 1pm Saturday, August 13th, with a reception to follow. There will be a private interment at a later date in Orleans. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated. www.kellyfh.ca

My daughter who is 17 just learned of the passing of Mark today by a colleague of hers who worked with him in the past. My daughter Lauren had semi-private swimming lessons with Mark about 4 or 5 years ago when he would have been about 17. He was her favourite instructor. So incredibly patient with the 2 girls when they had hesitations about diving down deep in the pool or something else that they lacked confidence in. Mark would always make it seem like the easiest thing in the world to accomplish and he gave Lauren the confidence she really needed to continue. As a adult, I enjoyed talking to Mark - asking him what his future plans were. He had just graduated from high school and was still deciding what he wanted to do. I remember that I purchased a gift card for the movies for Mark after the lessons came to an end. It is something I don't usually do but I felt compelled to somehow repay him personally after being such a great mentor to Lauren. Lauren and I just spoke of Mark a few days ago. I asked my daughter if she thought that Mark was still teaching swimming since she is now working with the summer camps at Bob McQuarrie and she replied that she had not run into him. That is why she called me today to inform me of the very sad news. I am sorry we are only finding out a year later, but I am sure you can tell that Mark had an effect on us because we can remember him so well years later. May you find comfort in the knowledge that even strangers were moved and touched by him. God bless.

To Mark's family,
As a mother, I offer you my most sincere condolences. I have had the pleasure of knowing him for a few years now. He had been giving my 2 youngest kids private swimming lessons at the pool. My youngest daughter and son just adored him as he was always so nice, patient and happy with them. They made up funny names for Mark (Marco Polo, Marcus, etc) and he always had a good patient laugh with them. I wish you a lot of courage in this difficult time and please know that we will miss him dearly this Fall when we return to the pool. My daughter was always making drawings for him and he would accept them and made her feel special. She is only 6 but she was very sad today to hear this news. we will make a prayer for you tonite. Penny, Bob and Tara,
Please accept my condolences on the sudden loss of your beautiful son and brother. I heard the shocking news when I returned from holidays, so I missed the wake and funeral. It was unbelievable to me. I remember his infectious smile that lit up his whole face from when I taught him in Grade 2. It sounds like he grew up to become a wonderful young man and a good friend to all, which he was destined to be from how he interacted with others at Convent Glen. May God, family and friends bring you strength in this difficult time.
Sincerely,

Anne Lillico

Dear Burton Family,
I would like to express my deepest sympathies to you in this hard time. I will always remember Mark as a kind, loving and caring individual. I had the privilege to work with me at the pool for the past few years and watch him grow as a person and as an instructor. His smile was so contagious, even if he made me so angry every time he would show up to work late, his personality and his smile made it impossible for me to stay mad at me for more than a few minutes. I am very grateful to have had the chance to invite him up to my cottage for a party last summer, before going up to the cottage; I had talk to him about a 40 foot cliff I always jump off of. He was so excited to come and up and try it. The second he got up to the cottage, I took him out in the boat and brought him to the cliff; he swam over and climbed to the jumping area. He never hesitated before he jumped. Once he got back to the boat, the pure joy and happiness that was in his eyes after doing this was amazing and I am really happy I got to share this time with him. He was truly an amazing human being, and will be missed by many. He will live on forever in our hearts. Rest in peace Mark.

Dear Burton Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the privilege of working with Mark since he first started at the pool. Mark was one of a kind, truly an amazing person, and one of the most intelligent people I ever knew. Some of my fondest memories of him are when we would be starting a shift and he would look at you and tell you how beautiful you were, even if it was 6 am and you knew you looked like a mess. His smile was contagious, and I will never forget his laugh. He always knew exactly what to say to lift your spirits when you were feeling down. I will miss him more than words can express and I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this is for you and your family. Stay strong, he may be gone but he will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

We are so sorry to hear of your son's death. Our hearts go out to Tara, Penny and Bob, and family and friends who knew and loved him. Tribute to Mark Burton
by Viren Gandhi on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 5:08pm
The world will never be the same without you Mark Burton !!! All of your loyal friends at Carleton U, including all your loving purple friends from Mike's Place and trivia, myself included are stunned and utterly devastated by this loss.

I know I am not alone when I say You were the most REAL and GENUINE person I've ever known. You possessed a heart of gold my friend, pure gold. THere will only ever be one of you Mark Burton! In a world full of dishonesty and narcissism you were a bastion of sincerity and kindness. You were ahead your time Mark, a true visionary of caring.
Clearly, you were evolved beyond our times.

Your ability to empathize and understand people was unparralled. You had a special gift for understanding our problems and accepting peolple as they are, and intuitively helped those who were hurting to resolve their many life
struggles. You did this with your kindness, your precocious intelligence and psychological insight. You gave people hope, and I am sad and afraid I will never find a more loyal and selfless human being.Your ideals of friendship were peerless. You were eternally supportive to me and to all of us. You strengthened and inspired me at such a deep level, and for this I am forever indebted.

As a clear social genius, your intelligence, sense of humour and magnitism were as contagious as your kind heart. Your crackling wit and spirited personality was vital. You consistently broke down all people's fears and barriers with your voracious sense of humour, warm charm that always filled our lives with joy, and filled the rooms with
laughter! You were perhaps the most loved person I have known, which makes this loss so unthinkable.
I am so angry that fate was permitted to break such a fine human being, and am so deeply saddened that I could not prevent it, and am hurt to the point where I now feel broken too.

Your genuinely kind nature, your love of fun and freedom, and your authentic heart will be sorely missed Mark. It is within this joyful and caring spirit that we will remember you so fondly. You listened, you touched our lives and our hearts, you were always there for us, and for this I will always love you and be grateful for!!!

Your friend always,
Vee Gandhi

August 12, 2011

To the Burton Family,

I first met Mark in kindergarden but became friends in grade 1 at OrleansWood. Even at a young age Mark had a special light, he always made me laugh. Then in grade seven it was like we picked up where we left off, and we remembered eachother - and Mark still had that same smile, light and humourous quality in him. We bonded and were good friends throughout high school, though we lost touch after we graduate he always hold a special place with me - he was like the brother i never had, always there for others, and was able to make any hard situation feel a bit better.

I hope you all are able to find some peace one day, and know that Mark was loved, and always will be.

If any of you ever need anything, do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Morgan
