Mark HARGRAVE Obituary
Dick died peacefully, surrounded by family and love, at the Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre on November 12, 2014, at the age of 87. Dick is survived by Grace - his loving wife of 57 years, five of their children (James, Mark, Leslie, Bruce and Anne), seventeen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many in-laws, and extended and blended family in Canada and the U.K.
Dick was born in Knottingley, Yorkshire on April 25, 1927, the youngest of Fred and Susannah Hargrave's seven children. Dick was very honoured to have had such a long, healthy, physically active, and happy life and to have been the longest living Hargrave. Grace observes "He never would admit that it was because he had married me." Dick was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, his daughter Susan in 1965, and his son Greg in 2011.
Dick enlisted in the British Army in October 1944 and served in India at the time of Independence. He immigrated to Canada in 1949 and worked as a surveyor in northern Ontario and New Brunswick. Dick and Grace met on an ocean liner in 1954, while he was heading home to England for a visit, and Grace was embarking on a tour of Europe. They were married in Winnipeg in 1957. They both graduated from the University of Toronto in 1959 and started their northern adventures in Tuktoyaktuk in 1960 when Dick took a job with the federal government and Grace taught school. Dick and Grace moved to Fort Smith, Whitehorse , Edmonton and finally to Ottawa in 1966, building their family along the way with Bruce and Anne making their appearance in Ottawa. Dick progressed in his career and worked for many years in the developing field of environmental protection. Dick retired in 1988 and very much enjoyed his "time off".
Dick loved his wife, family, his friends, Canada, Willard Lake, CBC Radio 2, singing in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Choir for 48 years, skiing, reading, gardening, cookies, McDonald's ice cream, Bridge, his bicycle, his beret and a bargain. We will miss him dearly; we were all so very blessed to have him part of our lives. Thank you to the Ottawa Civic and Élisabeth Bruyère healthcare teams for their compassionate care.
Visitation will take place at Kelly Funeral Home, Walkley Chapel, 1255 Walkley Road, Ottawa, 613-731-1255 www.kellyfh.ca on Friday, November 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1758 Alta Vista Drive on Saturday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be sent to Action Life Ottawa, Campaign Life Ottawa, or the Élisabeth Bruyère Foundation in Dick's memory.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Mr.Hargrave. Some of my best memories as a kid are of Dick, not quite yelling at Mark and I, for doing something we weren't suppose to do. And of course being asked if I didn't have a home of my own to go to. Thanks for having an awesome front lawn you could actually play a football game on. Thanks for not yelling at us when someone, I think it was John Thornton, fell out of the big tree and almost killed himself. And just thanks Mr. Hargrave for letting all us kids run wild around your house when we were young.

Dear Grace and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Both of you (Grace and Dick) were such a blessing to my Mum, Lettie Morse, over the past several years. He always had a welcoming smile for me and kind words. I mostly remember the busy house off Alta Vista and the Hargrave clan competing (and usually winning) against the Peters. It was like having four more older brothers and two sisters. I especially love the impact he has had in my favourite niece's life. Mr.Hargrave will be sadly missed by all.
