Mark Hjelm Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2024.
Mark Daniel Hjelm, affectionately known as the 'unofficial park ranger' for his love of the great outdoors, embarked on his final trail hike to the heavens on July 7, 2024, at the age of 62, in Woodbridge, VA. Born on July 27, 1961, in Washington, D.C., Mark's journey through life was marked by his immense warmth and generosity. He was the silent hero in many lives, lending a helping hand with the stealth of a forest creature.

A master of 'going hunting' without ever really hunting, Mark was famed for disappearing into nature's embrace, often found napping on a rock or under a tree, communing with the whispers of the wind. His family knew that when Mark said he was hunting, he was actually on a quest for serenity among the mountains he so dearly loved.

He leaves behind a loving wife, Cassandra; sons Christopher and Stephen; daughters Corinne, Olivia, and Makenna; son-in-laws Ivan and Anthony; stepdaughters Chelsey, Alannah, and Brittney; stepmom Nouaneta; and siblings David, Sam, Joanne, Kristina, Ai and Thanva. His legacy also blooms in the lives of his nine grandchildren who were his compass in life. Also numerous nieces and nephews who were his saplings. Preceding him in his journey were his father Howard, mother Mary, and brothers Richard and Eric.

A celebration of life, more akin to a cheerful forest gathering, will take place on July 27, 2024. For further details or to swap stories of Mark's legendary quiet escapades, reach out to Cassandra at [email protected]
In lieu of traditional gestures, the family suggests monetary contributions, donating to pancan.org or planting a tree in Mark's memory, ensuring his love for nature keeps growing, one sapling at a time.

I am so very sorry to hear about Mark´s passing. He was just a great guy. He took care of our pools for 30 years and always enjoyed talking to him. Was shocked to see his obituary and so sorry for all his family . My deepest condolences.

Mikaela said, "I remember when Mark took us to the top of the mountain and let us lay on top of the van to look at the stars." Max said, "Uncle Mark took the time to teach me things in the woods and he was a great uncle." Brandon said, "I loved when Mark said he had to show us something and took us up the mountain to show us the stars. He really made an effort to talk to me and know what I´ve been up to." Xander smiled as he describes how uncle Mark would give him anything he wanted to eat and drink (even if Mommy wouldn´t have let him). I, Nicole, have spent more hours "going to uncle marks" in the past 40 years than I can count. He was always welcoming, always someone you could count on and go to for refuge, solace....a home away from home. Mark was dear to us in so many ways. His impression on our lives is like a guide like the animal prints he enjoyed showing us on hikes. We will miss you Mark.
