Mark King Obituary

Published by www.denverpost.com on Jul. 19, 2016.
Mark McCandish King, age 56, was delivered into God's loving arms July 13, 2016 while doing what he loved so dearly, fishing with his sons Michael and Colton. Mark was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, son, uncle, nephew and cousin who loved life and lived it to its fullest.
Mark was a business visionary, exceptional investor and a highly regarded leader in the private equity industry. Mark founded businesses in Manhattan beginning in 1985, and then in Denver in 1988. Mark completed his first acquisition, of Bowen Smith Tower Company, with the Cadmus Group, which he also co-founded when he was only 27 years old. From 1989 thru 1995 Mark also was Co-Founder and President of Industrial Services Technologies, a leading engineering and environmental turn around services firm. Mark was inspired in 1996 to of conceive and be the Co-Founder of the first Denver originated and based private equity firm of its type, KRG Capital Partners. Mark's career spanned more than 31 years and included co-founding two leading middle market private equity firms, KRG Capital Partners and Revelstoke Capital Partners.
As a Managing Director at both KRG and Revelstoke, Mark was a creative leader behind the growth stories of many industry leading companies in the middle market, completing hundreds of successful acquisitions and employed thousands of people. Mark served as the Chairman of the Board, or a Director, of numerous successful companies in the middle market in which Revelstoke and KRG Capital invested. For his inspiration, vision and creativity, Mark was truly a trusted and valued partner to the many entrepreneurs and management teams with whom he worked with over his career.
In addition to his history of professional successes, Mark not only had a natural ability of capturing people's respect but their hearts. To know Mark was to love him! Those who loved him, were hooked for a lifetime. His energy was compelling and he left a trail of friendships around the world.
Charismatic, and boisterous his presence would light up a room and attract people to him instantly. He was playful holding push up contests and hockey shootouts in the office, he'd ask strangers at restaurants for a bite of their food, and start the music and the dancing began.
His generosity extended well beyond monetary gifts. He'd help people pursue their dreams, give advice on business plans, and rescue almost anyone in need. He was a very diverse individual who was larger than life. Not only a highly successful businessman and brilliant thinker but a lifelong outdoorsman and global traveler as well as committed father, dedicated family man and doting husband. He had a way of leaving things better than he found them and people gravitated to his energy.
One of his most impressive qualities was the ability to overcome adversity. Throughout this life, he was provided tremendous experiences yet enormous challenges. His hunting days and summer ranch duties as a teenager enhanced his ability to be tough. His resilient and persistent nature was the heart of his success. He knew what he wanted and was determined to get it. With a successful business, an adoring wife, a loving family, lifelong friends and sons who were at his side on his last adventure, Mark passed on a happy man.
Mark was a philanthropist donating to numerous charities including National Jewish Hospital and serving on its Board of Directors. Mark Co-Founded and provided original funding for and charitable contributions to Evergreen Country Day School. In addition to his love of fishing, Mark was an extreme skier, avid mountain biker and was a superior sporting clay, skeet and trap marksman. Mark loved to play hockey with his sons. Mark loved flying and the traveling it entailed.
Mark was born June 30, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Cherry Hills Village, Colorado when he was eight weeks old as the son of John McCandish King and Carylyn Becker King (Lewis) and grew up there with his brother John McCandish King IV, and his sisters Carylyn K. Dooley and Sally K. Rogers. Mark is survived by his wife Julie P. King, sons Michael M. King and Colton M. King and their mother Brenda K. King, his mother Carylyn B. Lewis and his step-father Bob Lewis, brother John and Debbie Marko, sister Carylyn and brother-in-law Michael Dooley, sister Sally and brother-in-law Bruce L. As teenagers Mark and John spent many happy evenings with my wife Dee Dee and me in our home. Mark was a true "force of nature" with a sweet side that endeared him to us forever more. It was gratifying to see a friend become so successful in business and as a family man.

The Bible says that "You can tell a lot about a tree by the fruit it produces." In that and many other respects, Mark was a mighty oak!

With much Love to Brenda, Michael and Colton and to Shelly and all of those who lost such an exuberant man. I have such fond memories of the mayhem at the Sunset Drive house in our joyful youth.
Rest In Peace, Mark and grace and comfort to the family in their grief.

Every now and then, life delivers us a random blow and sets us back in our chair. This is particularly true when the life of a loving and productive member of society is cut short somewhere in the middle, and the many interesting unwritten chapters of a charismatic individual have to remain unwritten.

Yet with Mark McCandish King, we get to celebrate an inordinately industrious legacy, and a cheerful goodbye for a life brimming with adventure, love, companionship and good nature.

Mark, and I both showed up in the neighborhood of Sunset Drive when we were toddlers. My crib must've been faster than his, as I believe I preceded him by approximately 7 months. Growing up with Mark and his brothers and sisters was a hoot! There was every matter of forced etiquette, over-privileged experience, fantasy adventure, and juvenile delinquency yet somehow we all made it through and managed to become productive respectful beings.

I read Mark's obituary and it's very full, amazing, and true, but I would like to share with you something that I felt was understated in his background. While the tribute acknowledges that one of Mark's most impressive traits was his ability to overcome diversity, those of us that witnessed the entire span of his life and career, truly must acknowledge what an understatement this is!!

Some in the Community may believe that Mark was given a more than adequate head start, but in point of fact, Mark had to overcome prejudices, roadblocks, and closed doors that most mortals would have never been able to open or overcome. Mark was more than resilient and persistent; he was downright dogged in his determination to succeed and was entirely self-made his life-giving energy and aura will be sorely missed.

My deepest condolences go out to Mark's mother Carolyn, Brenda, Michael and Colton, Julie, John Jr., Carrie and Sally, and the extended King Family.

With Love, Gary Vickers

I will always miss playing football with Mark as we did when we were young where I was the quarterback and he was the wide receiver. Mark had speed, quickness, agility and great hands. We scored many long pass touchdowns in our Sunset Drive back yard, albeit without any opposition. I can't believe we will never be able to speak again in this life and throw a Hail Mary. Rest in Peace, my Brother!!! I love you, Mark for all eternity!!!
