Its amazing the impact he had on everyone's lives. We were friends at Walter zadow together before having a child's... falling out as it were. But even still when I first read about it my heart sank. Even to this day I think to myself... what a life to take away...

I have the same message to Mark's family as Eddie. I swam for Guelph and was new to the sport when I met Mark at a meet in Nepean. He had an amazing personality, always a smile and a word of encouragement. I was shocked to hear of his passing only recently and although I only knew him for a short few years he really had a positive impact on my life. Never forgotten.

it's been a long time since ive even talked to him but i remember him being very funny and always bringing a laugh. He will be missed.

To Mark's family,
Mark was a remarkable guy. I spent some time with him during swim meets on my first 3 years in Canada, and there was no one, not even in my own swim team that made me feel so welcome as he did. He made me feel calm when on my first swim meet in Canada, he explained to me how things worked. I barely spoke english!! so i know it must have been hard for and somewhat annoying for him, but he was patient, warm and he helped me through it. I ll never forget him, he motivated me to open up to the rest, to meet new friends. He showed me that there are some people that care. That day he acted from his heart. He never doubted, it was a instinct, he never judged me, he simply helped me. I know u r proud of him and i assure u that he is in a better place.

I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to your family. I did not
know your son, but I do know one of his
best friends, Ben Gardiner. I work with
Ben's mother and the shock of what has
happened has overwhelmed me. As a
mother myself, the pain must be unbearable. I lost a nephew when he
was 19 from a car accident too and at that time I kept asking God why, why someone so young...and here we are again. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I worked shoulder to shoulder with Mark this past summer at the Royal Ottawa Hospital project..He worked for Site prep. and it was the first time i met him.....When i shook his hand and saw his big smile..i knew immediately this guy was special!...As we talked...his great sense of humour came out loud and strong..and he made me laugh!!...We talked about girls and sports..and almost forgot we were at work!...But thats the kind of effect he had on me...I just met him and i felt like we were friends for years!!....It was a pleasure to go to work with Mark...His positive attitude and HARD work made him a guy you wanted to be around!...He was left in charge of a very large site, and posessed the skills of a leader!...Mark was always on site early ..and the last to leave..We all thought he was an excepitonal young man...EVERYBODY liked him and he will be missed very much...I was shocked when i heard the terrible news..I still cant believe it.....But i was lucky enough to have met him,and saw what a special person he really was....

January 28, 2008

Dear Hazel, Andrew & Simon
I new Mark and Simon since their days at NKB. As a coach I had the priviledge of seeing Mark compete in what he loved to do and how he inspired others to do their best. His compassion for others and his deep love for life was infectious to all those who swam with him. But what I will remember him the most for was the impact he had on my children, especially my son, when he came with Emily Gillespie to "babysit". Adam looked up to him as a role model. Mark made Adam feel special, like a buddy and he always had time for him. Adam has great memories of their pillow fights together!! It's because of Mark that Adam swims today. In my son's words when I told him of Mark's passing..."Mom, he was so cool!! He was my favourite babysitter ever". Thank you Mark, from the bottom of my heart for the impact you had on my children and my young swimmers throughout the years. You will forever be in our hearts!!

Dear Hugh, Hazel, Simon and Andrew,
Just to say how very saddened we were to hear of Mark. Not having known him ourselves, it hasn't taken long to have heard and read about what a wonderful guy he was..and how his life has touched so many others in such a positve and bright way. We have heard from my relatives in Perth (Scotland), of the very special time they had with him and his brother over New Year, and again heard of what an extremely likeable and "genuinely interested in other people" person he was. So desparately sorry for your tragic loss, and will be thinking of you at this time and in the months ahead.

Hugh, Hazel, Andrew and Simon,
I just returned from attending Mark's funeral. It really was a wonderful service. I wasn't sure that I could make it but am glad I went. Mark was a kid with a great sense of humour who often left Hugh stranded at the office while he was off somewhere with the car. Realizing that he was one of the victims of this horrendous accident came as such a shock. My sincerest condolances.

The MacDonald Family:
As a former member of NKB, I swam with Mark for as long as I can remember. I have many fond memories of him from those days, both in the pool and out. Even after we graduated and life took us in our separate ways, whenever I ran into Mark I was always greeted with a big hug and a huge smile. His contagious laugh and smiling face remain fresh in my memory. He was loved by everyone lucky enough to know him. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
