Mark Adams Robertson

Nov. 3, 1959 - May 8, 2017

Mark Robertson, son, brother, husband, and friend of many died peacefully on May 8, 2017 after confronting a long illness with the same courage, resiliency, and good humor that pervaded all aspects of his life.

Mark was born in Manila, Philippine Islands, November 3rd, 1959 to parents, Nan and Adrian Robertson. The family lived in Manila, Bangkok, and Calcutta before settling in Hong Kong in 1965 where Mark received his British education throughout his early student years.

Mark loved life. He participated in sports… especially scuba diving, water polo, and golf, his studies, and a myriad of extracurricular activities. He completed Outward Bound's standard course in survival and was a member of two mountaineering expeditions to Nepal and another to Taiwan. Mark was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh's gold medallion for outstanding social service and personal enrichment at a ceremony held in Hong Kong at Government House on May 15, 1978.

At the age of 17, Mark left Hong Kong, following his dreams to one day become an architect. He attended the University of Washington, Seattle. Following his graduation in 1980, and on the advice of his faculty friends in the architecture department Mark took his cum laude diploma and ventured out into the "real world". Attempting to broaden his horizons and gain work experience. He embraced all that he learned… in the construction industry, as a commodities broker, in commercial freight marketing, life insurance sales and with Bob Blunk and Associates, as a draftsman in Burlingame, California.

With strong ties in the San Francisco bay area, Mark brought his beloved Michelle Martin to San Mateo, from Seattle and on December 6th, 1986 the two were married. As husband and wife on the Peninsula, together they drew a deep breath and Mark announced: "I've always wanted to be an architect, and a good one - the time has come". With that, he carved out a career for himself in the Bay Area doing what he loved most.

Mark was always creative, had a talent for art and design, people skills matched only by dogged determination to be faithful to his high standards of excellence.

A family memorial service has been held to honor and remember Mark. His family, friends worldwide, colleagues, clients, and all who knew this remarkable man are asked to keep him in their prayers.

"Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are with us" ANON.

Oh, Dearest Mark. I have never forgotten the first time we met in the dorms at UW when we were freshmen. You were one of the first friends I made - within two weeks of starting school there. And our friendship continued for many, many years and then we got to include your lovely Michelle and my sweet Glen in our friendship.

You were truly one of the funniest and funnest persons I've ever known. You had a heart of pure gold and were so inclusive to everyone around you. You had that boyish charm, a twinkle in your eye, and this innocent mischievous and playful side. You LOVED life and my life is greater because you were in it. I miss you and so wish you were still here with us!!!!

My heart breaks for Michelle.

Dear Robertson Family, my deepest sympathy goes out to you at this time. Although 40 years ago since Mark and I lived and explored our Hong Kong world together I cannot help to remember the fun loving, generous natured young man who was one of my best friends. Whether at school, tramping all over Hong Kong trying to attain our Duke of Edinburgh Award or swimming in the school pool I will recall with happiness the friendship we shared. The memories of the trips on your boat and the other great times we had together remain as bright as if today. My condolences especially to Mr and Mrs Robertson and Mark's sister Kim. Rest peacefully Mark

Such sad news. I was in the same class (756) at Island School and remember Mark most vividly from Duke of Edinburgh camps, especially his fondness for Angel Delight instant pudding. I can still see him at the front of the pack on the long slogs through Taiwan, unlike the rest of us, he never seemed to need a rest. Deepest condolences to all his family. Rest in peace Mark.

Dear Mr and Mrs Robertson. Mark and I were friends when at Island School - we were in the same class. We had some lovely times together and I also remember you both as I also attended St.John's cathedral every Sunday morning for worship.
I will pray for you all. It has been a shock to learn that Mark has died so young. I send you my love, Jane (nee Walton.)

Ridge Court, Kennedy Road, Island School - our formative years ran pretty much in parallel my friend. We've recently had a reunion in Hong Kong where we'd heard the news of your next journey. There was a lot of love in the room and we were all wishing you were there with us. I guess you were in spirit. Till our paths converge again one day - RIP.

RIP buddy. We had fun times growing up in HK. I remember the D of E camps, the trip to Taiwan and your amazing mom at the school PTA. I regret not catching up sooner. Prayers and condolences to the family.

I will always remember 20 years of hugs, laughter and good times. Always the inspirer, you helped me have the confidence to move forward with important decisions....personally and professionally. If there's a better place to be than here, I know you'll be welcomed with open arms. Thank you for being a great friend.
