It's been a year already. I can only hope my choices can make even a speck of a positive difference you made to so many lives and to the other Scouts and Eagle Scouts under your tutelage. A week, a day? doesn't go by I don't reach for something or I'm thinking through a tough decision that brings back a long lost memory of you teaching me the best way to go about it or a jovial Scouting memory flashes in my head but only for a moment like a peaceful time around a fire with a smile so contagious. If you asked me today for a couple roses and a thorn, your passing is one of the largest thorns I have yet to encounter but the roses Mr. Schaub, your helpfulness and impact is never ending.
To the family, he was one of a kind.

Bennett just called me today and I thought it was going to be Mark when I picked up. I am so sorry for your families loss. Mark and I met 30 years ago when I started my business and we did business together for all these years. He was a big influence in my career and the development of my business East Coast Energy Products. We referred jobs to each other and did many together. He took me with him one an episode of This Old House and catapulted my business into the future. Quite coincidentally we had both lived in Midland, MI. We spoke and saw each other often. I can hardly imagine life without him and my sympathies go out to Anne and the boys who's hearts are surely broken. What he has taught me will remain with me. He was a cherished friend.

[Continued]
I vividly remember the crossroads I was facing when entering high school, and how Mr. Schaub helped me stay focused on the road to becoming an Eagle Scout: scheduling conflicts made attending scout meetings and camping trips challenging, and it was clear I needed to align my priorities. Mr. Schaub pulled me aside after a troop meeting (I had been absent from a number of prior meetings) and he posed me a question: do you want to continue in scouts?'.
It wasn't the simple question he asked, but the unassuming, judgement-free, sincere, and frank way in which he asked me that question that made his message clear: there's no pressure for me to commit to any one extracurricular activity (Boy Scouts included), but putting in anything less than 100% into anything I do isn't acceptable. It was this short conversation (and the good fortune of having an incredibly supportive troop, community, and family) that had a profound impact on the direction of my life. I, like so many of the kids throughout the years that have been positively impacted by Mr. Schaub and his kind family, have so much to be grateful for, and am truly sorry for his loss, but know that he will live on forever in our minds and hearts.

Mark Schaub Senior, or Mr. Schaub to many of us, was always larger than life to me. He always had a jovial demeanor about him and had an impactful way of delivering countless life-shaping and character-building messages that shaped me and so many other Troop 10 Boy Scouts into Eagle Scouts and positive contributors to society. His wisdom as our Scout Master was seemingly all-encompassing when discussing tactical things like preparations and gear for backpacking in the dead of winter, every single thing you need to bring for the canoe trip, the best types of boots to get (anything waterproof, but MOAB are the best), always bring a fleece because they dry instantly (and you need to stay dry to stay warm), or more abstract concepts, like keep your hands busy and out of your pockets' (especially on cold-weather trips) that taught us how to be a productive and helpful member of not only our troop but also our community. Mr. Schaub helped develop character, a good work ethic, integrity, and positivity into me during my formative years that I'll be forever grateful for, and while he's no longer with us physically, he'll continue to live on in our hearts, fond memories, and Schaubisms that stand the test of time.

Shock and sadness to hear the passing of Mark. It was always a pleasure to call him to refer him a job to fix a chimney. He always figured it out, no matter how difficult. The best part, was to have an excuse to spend time seeing him and catching up on all of his adventures and his love of Maine and of his family. Only the good die young. I will truly miss this young man, his energy, his positive enthusiasm for life. No doubt he is knee deep in a river in heaven with his Dad and Uncle Ray. RIP dear friend. Todd Stires

We are so saddened by the untimely loss to Mark's family. We are also grieving with Mark's brother Rick, our son-in-law, and our daughter Sue. Mark was always our good friend and frequently the go-to guy for help with home maintenance issues. We have appreciated his thoughtfulness, humor and all-round good will. We will always remember Mark and mourn his passing. He was a special person.

My sincerest thoughts to the Schaub family. Words cannot describe how truly sorry I am for your family to lose Mark - your husband, father, brother and grandfather - or a great friend. I will say, I am truly blessed and humbled to have known Mark. He was undoubtedly the finest man I’ve ever came across in life, which I often boasted about him in conversation. I am thankful for Mark being that mentor in my son Jacobs life, and to show him the great attributes a person should have - leading by example. I am grateful to the Schaub family - for sharing Mark with Troop 10 - a guy even I looked to as a mentor to be a better person. He will certainly be missed, and can’t fathom what you’ll are going through. Keep tight the beautiful memories and wonderful person he was - to give you the strength to see through another day.
God bless,
Jeff Miller

I love the outdoors, and whenever I camp anywhere, I can always remember Big Mark telling us to leave the campsite cleaner than when you found it. I take that with me wherever I go outside. I have a profound sense of respect for keeping nature wild, and a lot of that comes from camping and fishing with him and my dad when I was young. This is just one example of the small ways he made the world a better place. Rest in Peace, and thank you for the laughs, lessons, and love.

I am at a huge loss for this sad news. There was no better person to know than Mark Schaub. Not only would he give you the shirt off his back at a moment's notice but would drop everything he was doing just to help you. He will be sorely missed in my world. I am grateful to have known him and will never forget his never ending smile. He enjoyed life everyday. My sincere condolences to Ann and the family. Thinking of you all in this hard time of our loss. May peace be with you.

Mark Schaub SR always had a smile and a kind remark for everyone- he was a Prince among men. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and neighbors on Pleasant Pond, Caratunk, Maine- his family's second home for decades. Mark JR had been a beloved member of the staff at Northern Outdoors since he was a teenager, and we consider him part of our family. Therefore, Northern Outdoors and its staff are honored to donate to the Pleasant Pond Protective Association in Mark Schaub SR's memory. Our hearts go out to all of his family and friends.

I am so saddened to hear of Mark's passing. I have worked with Mark for over 15 years and the picture above is how I always saw him, with a smile on his face. Even if he had an issue, he always cared about the person at the other end and always wanted to do what was right. Mark will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Schaub family. I am so so sorry for your loss.

Mrs. Schaub and All sons,
On the many times we spoke of his wife, his sons, and his time in Maine there was always a sparkle in Mark’s eyes. Mark was a true friend, devoted husband and father. I’m
writing this sitting next to the quadrafire wood stove he helped me install after normal working hours. This is a huge loss for us here in NJ and Maine. I look forward to continuing our business relationship with Ben. Mrs. Schaub: My wife and I extend our deepest sympathies to you. You should have some solace in knowing he had to work to make a living, but couldn’t wait to get to Maine to be with you during the summers and holidays. I wish you well.
With love - Taylor/Nicole and Piper, Reagan, Tanner, and Scout.

Dear Anne, Mark, John, Bennett, and Bill,
We were stunned and so saddened to hear this news. Mark was a great leader to hundreds of boy scouts, and equally a friend and mentor to all of us dads who knew him through Troop 10. We all have countless memories of Mark during the many adventures we shared: his jokes, his cooking, the independence he gave to the older scouts, and his attempts to show a tough exterior, which could never mask his kind heart.
Even more than scouting, my memories of Mark are about how much he loved Anne, and how thoroughly proud he was of his four sons as they grew from teenagers to adults.
Our most sincere condolences on your loss.

I am so saddened by this loss. Mark was always kind and thoughtful and great fun to be around. I remember him coming to save my cat who had been chased up a tree when no one else would help.
Meeting Mark and Anne when we first moved to Pennsylvania made the move so much easier. They became my Pennsylvania family when I was missing my relatives. Learned so much from both and had so much fun while doing so!
I'm so very sorry Anne, for you and your whole family. Prayers and hugs for you

I've known Mark many years through the Chimney Sweep Trade. We would refer him without reservation to jobs beyond our range. Always a joy to speak with and Brother in the trade. It was cool to talk of Scouting as I was also a Scout Master with Troop 60. He will be greatly missed and yet remembered as a true craftsman. My utmost respect and condolences to Marks loved ones. Mr. Schaub was a fantastic Scoutmaster, and made my years with Troop 10 both fun and memorable. He was always there to help, teach, and entertain. The canoe trip we did up in Maine especially stands out in my mind as one of the highlights of my scouting career. So sorry to lose such a great man.

Anne and boys,
Heartfelt prayers and hugs for you and your family. His kindness, smile and laughter always made any situation better. Our family will always be grateful and admire one cold Christmas morning viewing Washington crossing the Delaware. Rich's mom fainted and refused to go to the hospital. The ambulance released us while the rest of our family had left for the hospital to meet us. Stranded, Mark quickly swooped us in to his nice warm truck and the boys let Grandma Selah view the crossing on their phone. Such a special man and family legacy. Our sincerest sympathies for your family. - Much love, Barb and Rich Selah
