Mark ZELL Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5, 2012.
ZELL, Mark, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, July 30, 2012, with his wife and daughter by his side. He courageously battled a rare form of leukemia with amazing faith and peace. Mark was born in Richmond on February 14, 1946 to Irvin and Tillie Cohen Zell. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and the University of Virginia in AEPi Fraternity. He was an extraordinary athlete. His skills in basketball and many other sports are well remembered. After teaching science and math in Chesterfield County and Marymont Schools, he entered the printing business in Richmond. He owned and operated his establishment selling and manufacturing printing for 43 years. He was a mentor to his employees and many business associates. He was a genuine friend to everyone. Mark helped countless people in many areas and walks of life. This was his pleasure. Mark was a member of St Giles' Presbyterian Church, active in Needles Eye Ministries, and The Second Half. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sarah Zell; his beloved daughter, Lainee Zell Biliunas and her husband, Mike; his cherished grandchildren, Mark and Natalie; three sisters, Marilyn Zell Moore (Steven), Sandy Zell Cohen and Arlene Zell Kates (Bob); and he will be greatly missed by many cousins, nieces and nephews he sincerely treasured. Mark Zell, beloved husband, wonderful father and relative, was truly a gentle man, uniquely committed to his strong faith in God. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, at St. Giles' Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226, with the family to receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark's memory to St. Giles' Presbyterian Church or Needles Eye Ministries, 104 Berrington Ct., Richmond, Va. 23221.

A wonderful soul - he was my neighbor many years ago in Charlottesville. He had a warm and caring heart. I loved to hear him laugh.

I was quite saddened to see that Mark had passed. We were old college buddies who lost touch, but renewed contact again when he became ill. It is sad that his illness is what it took to bring us together again. I will miss him.

Mark's family,
I hope each day brings you richer memories, and each message about what a wonderfully kind and generous man Mark was, brings you peace. His was a beautifully lived life, and many are touched by that. I knew him through the world of printing and worked with him on many annoying little printing projects that distracted him from the easy ones! He was charming, forgiving and generous through it all.
Blessings on your journey.

Mark...Thank you for being a friend when I needed a helping hand. Thank you for being a counselor when I didn't have a plan. Thank you for making me laugh when inside I wanted to cry. Thank you for the cherished memories of the years passed by. Thank you for the holidays shared with your family when normally I'll be without. Mark you will be truly missed from the bottom of my heart.

Sarah and Lainee,
I just talked to Mike and heard the news about Mark. We were on vacation last week and I didn't know. Mark was such a giving and caring person. He always had time to sit and talk with me. I will truly miss seeing him however, I know we will see each other again one day. Until then, God speed ahead Mark!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family. Love to all...

I married into the family and had the pleasure of knowing Mark since 1972. He was always one of my favorite uncles. He always welcomed my family into his home back when we were younger and in better health, and I always loved spending the weekend in Richmond. It was my hideaway from the world, and the stress of work and life in general. I always told Mark and Sarah the world didn't have a clue where I was and no chance of finding me. When Mark and I were in our prime we were both softball fanatics and could both hit the "long ball" so far you didn't think it would ever touch down. Once when I was young and stupid I tried to beat Mark at eating pizza. No chance of that. Needless to say I lost and was miserable the rest of the night to boot. Mark, I will miss you greatly, old friend. Sarah, Lainee and family, I am so sorry for your loss and I will keep you in my prayers. Keith Belcher, Roanoke, VA.

Mr. Zell was my teacher when I was in the 8th grade so long ago. He was so handsome and kind, all the girls had crushes on him. He treated each of us with the greatest of respect and was a good friend at the same time. I will never forget him nor will the students who had positive impact by his life.

I had Mr. Zell for 8th grade science class. He was one of my MOST favorite teachers. He was very interesting, funny, and creative. There was never a day that I didn't look forward to going to his class. After all of these years, I still talk about what a wonderful teacher he was. I also thought he was VERY handsome! He will be missed by many of his former students. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

I worked for Mark for many years. My son had chicken pox and I would miss work for 7-10 days and no pay. So Mark came up with an idea, sent the delivery driver and everything I would need to keep working for those days to my house. What a relief. This was the kind of generosity and kindness the man showed to all around him. Mrs.Zell and Lainie I hope you have many more story's like these to comfort you and warm your heart.

My brother-in-law was truly a genuine man. He was a strong man, who fought his fight and ran his race with strength and dignity.
He:Loved deeply
Shared his faith
Welomed all with open arms
Showed interested in and
supported others
Shared himself in FUN with others,
with that sly grin and easy chuckle
Mark, I have been blessed to have you in my life and will miss you much.
Sarah and Lainee, we love you and will be close by as you walk through this valley. We will also be there in the future to lovenly share, laugh and remember our "Mark stories".
