Mamalakis, Markos John, PhD, born in 1932, in Salonika, Greece to Ioannis and Renate (Rocha) Mamalakis; peacefully departed to the Lord on July 10, 2024, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his wife, Angelica (Athanasiou), brothers Paul and Errikos, and son-in-law, Steven D. Huff. He is survived by his sister Margaret, brother-in-law, Michael Athanasiou, and children Anna (Andrew) Flynn, Catherine (Mark) Seidel, Marina Huff , John (Becky), Andreas (Margo), Philip (Georgia) , Irene (Chris) Robaidek, Peter, Joanna (Dean) Lavdas, Alexandra (Alex) Trigonis, Emmanuel (Kimberly) and Thomas. He is further survived by his grandchildren Vanessa, Dominic, Robert (Anya), Ruthanna, Timothy (Denise), Sister Gavrilia, Father Ephraim, Stephen (Margarita), Bridget, Dan (Gwen), Ioanna, Mark John, Nicoletta, Justina, Nathanael, Angeliki, Isaac, Ephremia, Kyranna (Fani), Alexandra, Kassiani, Nikolia, Markos, George, Alexios, Joseph, Noelle, Jacob (Christina), Leonidas, Markos Constantine, Irene, Michael, Joseph, Nektarios, Luke, Tatiana, Matthew, Benjamin, Gabriella, Michaela, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Professor Mamalakis graduated from the Experimental High School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1950, then attended the Law School of the University and received a B.A. in Law, with the distinction summa cum laude in 1955. He did graduate work at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1955 to 1957, and University of California, Berkeley from 1957 to 1962, where he received his M.A. (1959), and Ph.D. (1962). Until his retirement, he was a professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee enjoying teaching, researching and publishing. He continually expressed great fondness for his colleagues and staff at UWM and the entire academic Economic community, especially for his students.
Markos continued to travel and lecture extensively throughout his lifetime, including his wife and children whenever possible in his travels. He raised his family on the East side of Milwaukee never missing his daily walk by Lake Michigan, regardless of the weather. Markos and his wife enjoyed, throughout their lifetime, the Milwaukee Opera, Symphony and Theater.
Markos and his wife were deeply devoted to their faith, raising their children as members of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa, WI. He found joy in every person he met and especially in his family, only confirmed by his continuous reference to his grandchildren, and all children he met as "pure gold".
