Marsha DiTOMASO Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Aug. 30, 2014.
DiTOMASO, Marsha Carolyn
(née Smith)
Born May 18, 1936
Deceased August 27, 2014
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of a passionate, modest, and very special lady on August 27, 2014. Marsha wanted very badly to continue life among family and friends, but despite her exceptional physical and mental stamina, she was taken from us by an aggressive cancer. Marsha is survived by her brother Derek Smith (Josie Monk), her loving husband Nick, her son Stephen (Luisa Ciofani), her daughter JoAnne, and her grandchildren Nicholas, Jesse, and Caroline. She was predeceased by her older brother Keith Smith earlier this year. Marsha provided unyielding support to her precious family. She was a very generous and compassionate person, always eager to help, and never wanting anything in return. She was a proud volunteer at Meals and Wheels, and she cared for kin in times if illness and need. Marsha was driven by very high standards and she had the determination to succeed no matter the cost. She was unique in so many ways: she was committed to a lifetime of physical fitness, an avid reader, and dedicated to constant learning and self-improvement. She had the willpower to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree at Sir George Williams University (with honours in history) by way of evening courses spanning 13 years, followed by a diploma in Library Science two years later. Marsha was also devoted to duplicate bridge, and anticipated every game and tournament with her dear partners and friends. She became very sad when she realized that she was forced to cease her many pursuits. Marsha was a gem of a person, who wanted only to be remembered as a loving family member, a trustworthy friend, and an honest and decent human being. Her loyalty to us will never be forgotten. She will be missed terribly and her passing has left a huge vacuum in our lives. We are devastated by her loss, yet grateful for the company and love she provided us over so many years. We are truly blessed. Marsha's inspiration, leadership, achievements, and role model qualities made her a hero to us all for all time. Many thanks to the professionals and staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital and at the West Island Palliative Care Residence for the humane and patient care they provided. Donations to either institution would be greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Marsha's Life will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club, 1350 Lakeshore Drive, Dorval, Quebec H9S 2E3 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Voluntas Commemoration in care of arrangements www.voluntas.ca.

Dear JoAnne and Steve and Dad Nick,
Very sorry to hear of the loss of your wonderful Mum. Although I did not know her very well she must have been an outstanding individual in every respect to bring up, along with your dad, two lovely children like yourselves.

Dear Uncle Nick, Stephen, Joanne and family,

Aunt Marsha was a person that I was truly fortunate to meet and knowing that she would be there no matter what, if needed, meant the world to me. She will always be remembered, treasured and loved in both my heart and mind.

“Success”

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

Inaccurately attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I had the opportunity, I always loved making and hearing my Mother and my Aunt Marsha laugh. Both were the most successful women I have ever met. Please accept my deepest sympathies and condolences on your loss.
