The world could use Marshall's ability to make friends with most everyone. I would love to see how he might have responded to the chaos of today. He was a great friend and a talented man.

It was with a deep sense of loss and sadness that I learned of the passing of my friend Marshall. Our families shared our early years of marriage and service in the military. Shared the magical day Jeff was born, as well a many travels and adventures. It was an honor to have had Marshall as a friend and brother. My prayers go out for Betty, Jeff, Ashley and the Vermillion family. He was a very special man and special friend. My life is richer for having shared time with the Vermillion's, even though it was long ago and very far away.

I am deeply saddened by your loss. Marshall was my First Union Commercial Banking Manager in Hickory, NC. I was the first 'loan officer assistant' and that role has continued in this organization (now Wells Fargo) by one name or another since then. He made a stressful merger tolerable and even fun. I will keep those memories alive.

I was lucky enough to meet Marshall during early days at First Union. He was a mischievous rascal, quick to laugh, caring and most outstandingly, an honorable man. It will always prompt a smile whenever I think of him which will be often. My deepest condolences to his family and, indeed, to his many friends as well.

I was privileged to work with Marshall on several occasions after I joined First Union through a merger back in 1989. Marshall taught me by his example that being a great leader includes caring deeply about your people, not taking yourself too seriously, and knowing how to have a good time. I will never forget him. I pray that his family will find comfort in this period of grief and, in the longer term, joy in their memories of him.
