Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 19 to Dec. 20, 2009.
Martha Adcock passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, Dec. 16, 2009, in San Antonio. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Martha had a long and fulfilled life. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., and raised in New York City, she was of Sephardic Orthodox Jewish ancestry. Her grandmother, Rose, was from Germany and her grandfather, Moses, from Tangiers, Morocco. Her parents, Estrella Wahnish Alsop and Edward "Ned" Hussey, were natives of New York City. All belonged to the Sherith Israel Synagogue in Manhattan, New York City. She was a graduate of George Washington High School and the New York City College of Arts. She attended Juliard School of Art for piano until joining the Army WAC, where she was a World War II nurse. She made her home in Baton Rouge, where she raised her nine children. Martha retired from the city of Baton Rouge and worked thereafter as a trials program hostess at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. She was longtime member of Beth Shalom Synagogue, where she found her roots. She performed the role of secretary for Liberal Synagogue in its early years. She was very patriotic and was a member of the American Legion Nicholson Post 38 and the Legionnaires. Devoting her later years to spending time with family and friends, she enjoyed traveling, reading and eating out. Her favorite was having coffee at Krispy Kreme. Hey, Grandma Martha. I know we didn't know each other too well, but I hear about how awesome you are all the same. My mom tells me all the time about how good you were at piano and I should follow in your footsteps and give a go at Julliard. I don't really think that's for me but Dad says that he hears you every time I sit down at the grand. I still have Coco (that white bear that you got for me). When you handed him to me at our doorstep, I remember him being twice my size. Now, Addison keeps him on her bed but I'm glad he's being taken care of all the same. A lot of your kids are gone now. Its just Eve, Sally, and Dad. But I wanna say he's happy, all the same. I hope I get to know you and your family a little bit better now. Wish me luck, bubbee!
