Martha Matloff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 29 to Jan. 30, 2023.
Martha Steadman Matloff 1937-2023.

Martha Steadman Matloff, age 85, of Cody, WY and Geneva, NY died on January 26, 2023 near her family in Branford, CT after a long and successful life. Martha was born in Cody, WY on August 24, 1937 to the late Oliver and Sarah (Donley) Steadman. As a young woman, she rode in the rodeo and loved horses. She earned her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from the University of Wyoming with in 1959 and her M.D. from the University of Colorado to earn in 1966. She did her medical residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester where she met David Matloff, whom would become her husband of 55 years. Martha and David eventually settled in Geneva, NY where they worked as an efficient and mighty team, running a successful medical practice together for decades, and raising two daughters: Ellen and Sarah.

Martha often delivered more than 300 babies per year at Geneva General Hospital and was known for her deep and lasting relationships with her patients and their families, and her ability to remember her babies' names and birthdays decades later when she ran into their parents in Madia's or Wegmans. Martha had forever relationships with her office staff and floor nurses, and was known for her feisty personality, dressing to the nines, the clink of her high heels and keys as she raced down the halls, cheering at her daughters' swim meets, softball games, and cheerleading competitions, and for being a fierce advocate for women. Martha was an expert cook and baker, and was known for baking cookies (to fill her giant cookie jar, only to be devoured by her daughters' friends), scones, and muffins in the wee hours of the morning when she returned home from a delivery. Her mondel bread was advance-ordered at the annual bake sale for Temple Beth-El and her scones are still requested at the annual Wassail Bowl.

Martha was a trailblazer and left a vast legacy. She served as a role model of what women can accomplish for her daughters, their friends, her granddaughters, and many of her patients, friends, and colleagues. Martha was beloved by all who knew her, especially her countless patients who spoke of "Dr. Martha" with high regard. She and her husband socialized regularly with their dear friends, both at their home and local establishments, and enjoyed watching football and basketball games, traveling, and visiting their daughters.

Martha loved everything Wyoming. She and David bought a mountain cabin in Wapiti, WY after their retirement and spent countless months enjoying Wyoming, Yellowstone, and their friends out West. Martha worked as a volunteer administering Covid vaccinations in Wyoming just one year ago and was an active member of her local PEO chapter.

In 2009 Martha's first granddaughter, Leah Donley Matloff, was born, followed 10 months later by her second, Ruby Aurora Redbord. Martha cherished her granddaughters, spent as much time with them as possible, and left her feisty DNA coursing through their veins.

Martha was predeceased by her parents, Oliver and Sally Steadman. She is survived by her husband, David, daughter Ellen (Michael Bowler), daughter Sarah, granddaughters Leah Matloff and Ruby Redbord, and her three beloved siblings: Don (Linda) Steadman; John (Sally) Steadman; Shirley (Wally) Steadman; as well as her nieces, nephews, and cousins. Per her request, Martha's ashes will be scattered at their cabin in Wapiti, WY. Martha did not want a service after her death. In her honor, please call a dear friend and tell them what they mean to you or bake something for a loved one.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's memory may be made to the PEO Chapter D of Cody, care of Debra Roland, 1187 Southfork Road, Cody WY 82414 with "In Memory of Martha Matloff" in the memo or to Branford CT Hospice at 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

I am so sorry that I missed the announcement of Dr Martha´s passing. Dr Martha delivered both of my daughters and ironically went to school with the OB who delivered my son when we lived in Colorado . I worked with her at GGH as an evening supervisor. She was so special ,a skilled OB, caring practitioner, fun , passionate and yes always dressed to the "nines" . When I retired she wrote me a lovely letter ... will always remember you , respect and admire you Dr Martha

Martha and I continued the friendship started by our parents, in college. When my family moved from California to Cody, Wyoming to join their dear friends, the Steadmans in trying to cure Ted Hirth's allergy problems. Martha and I were close friends at Cody High School, and shared great times with our families. I will always treasure the memories of our special friendship, and the close connection of our families.

As I read Dr. Martha´s obit I am reminded how she lived-she lived hard. I am forever grateful that she was my GYN @ HWS & subsequently was my OB/GYN delivering all 3 of our children: Preston, Lindsay & Garrett @ GGH, traveling at all hours north on Main St. Her dedication to her patients & their families was measured only in comparison to the love she had for her own family. I NEVER found another MD like Dr. Martha. Sending hugs & prayers to David, Ellen & Sarah.

I had the privilege of working with Dr Martha and Dr David on West Wing and then the OR. Both were remarkable in their fields, but more importantly, so compassionate. What a rich life Dr Martha had and left an amazing legacy! She truly lived life to its fullest!
May we all take a piece of her energy and share it with the world.
Dr David and family-I pray for your comfort. .

One of the most caring people I ever met. Ahead of her time for Women´s rights. She saved my daughters life and always showed how much she cared. Truly an Angel Rest in Peace Sweet Lady.

During our high school years, Martha and I were regular participants in the summer nightly parades and the Cody Night Rodeos. We lost touch after graduation and reconnected about six years ago when I came back to settle in Cody. It is so heartening to learn how she touched women´s lives. I will miss her unique, strong spirit and warm heart.

Dr. Martha delivered me in 1979 and I only recently connected with her through her gracious daughter Ellen. I have heard stories throughout my life of this beautiful, kind woman who helped inspire a young, impressionable mother-to-be to do things like read to her baby to help them love books and be smart, and play tennis to help her body stay strong. My mom recently recounted how she stood at a wall of framed photos of the doctors at Geneva General Hospital and knew immediately that she wanted Dr. Martha to be her doctor. She has always been the best doctor my mom has ever had.

I pray for her family during this very sad time, but I hope they find peace in her legacy of strength and hope.

Sending my deepest condolences to Dr. Martha´s family and loved ones.

Dr. Matloff was my mother´s OB/GYN in 1979. Over the course of my lifetime I listened to stories of this beautiful, vivacious woman with the most memorable smile and style. Dr. Matloff helped my mom, a young 17-year-old Chamorro girl, connect with her baby and offered advice and suggestions on how to love herself and her baby. From reading to me so that I could grow up to love books, to playing tennis to keep her body strong, Dr. Martha has left an indelible impact on mine and my mom´s life.

Very recently, my mom was recounting a memory of the best doctor she´s ever had and I decided to try to find Dr. Martha on social media. What I found instead was her amazing and gracious daughter, Ellen, who kindly helped me connect with her mom. I was able to share with Dr. Martha my love for reading, volunteering, and advocating for those in need and I thanked her for being the gentlest soul on a young impressionable woman. She made a difference in my mom´s life, and in turn, my own.

I pray for her husband, children, and grandchildren to find peace in her glorious memory. Her legacy in the memories of all those lives she has touched and I know, without a doubt, that she is an angel as she was here in this world.

I became a patient of Martha´s when we first moved to Geneva. She delivered our two sons and I remember her rubbing my back as I was going through labor and sending a rose after each delivery. She always took the time after appointments to chat with you about your family and when we had a sick child in the hospital she was so helpful and caring. Over the years we became friends and after she retired we´d meet for lunch or coffee. I always enjoyed hearing about her life growing up-how much she enjoyed the rodeo, the beauty of Wyoming, and how she became a physician. Often she would talk about her daughters and grandchildren and how proud she was of all of them. I loved her honesty, her spunk, and her kindness. I´m so glad I had those special times with her and I will miss her so very much. My heart goes out to her family for their loss.

My entire childhood spent in Geneva is filled with wonderful memories of Dr. Martha- so many Friday night meals out and Sunday family dinners...and so much delicious food from her kitchen. I could not have asked for three more incredible female role models growing up than I had in Dr. Martha, Sarah, and Ellen. Dr. Martha was the perfect example of what it means to be a good human and I will forever be grateful for her warm Sunday hugs and her words of wisdom.

Dr. Dave, Sarah, Ruby, Ellen, Michael and Leah- Sending all of you Dr. Martha kind of hugs and our love.

I made her French silk pie and Marvelous Mushrooms yesterday with my girls and smiled all afternoon thinking about her.

I am one of the "Class of 55" high school classmates of Martha. We had a small class and a tight knit group and have stayed that way over the decades. We were classmates in grade school, junior high and high school and continued seeing one another at class reunions. In later years we started reunions every 5 years and yearly picnics between reunions. Martha seldom missed an opportunity to see her old friends. I considered Martha one of my dearest friends. Her medical background helped me get through one of the most difficult times of my life. I had two life saving surgery's in 2015 that she provided counsel for. We had many emails back and forth before and after the events. I will be forever grateful for her help.
In her obituary, fisty was used as one description. That was one of her traits that was so special. She was that way in the 1st grade! I'll miss you Martha, we all will.

Dr. Martha was the most caring person. When my mother was her patient she found a mass in her breast. My mother was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer st the same time. She went through both surgeries at the same time. Dr Martha wasn't doing surgery so Dr. David did her breast surgery after Dr Dikso did the hysterectomy. Dr Martha came to visit mom every day and brought her a rose. She truly cared for people. She is loved and will be missed but never forgotten. Fly with the angels now, Dr. Martha. Love and hugs for Dr. David and family

Dear Dave, Ellen and Sarah,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you on this sad occasion. We cherish the memories of all our visits from our time in Rochester. We shared numerous Thanksgivings, holidays and birthday celebrations while growing up. You girls we just arriving and toddlers at that time. Your family were our best friends back then. I will always remember how close Mom and Marty were and thankful for those times together. She was definitely an excellent cook and baker. The vanilla cake with whip cream frosting was a Birthday favorite for sure.
There´s no way to ease the sadness at this time but all the memories of a life well lived hopefully will support your family going forward. Sending our Love, Bruce, Dave and Larry Kaufman

Sarah and Ellen, I´m so very sorry for your loss. A loss we all feel. Your mother was so much more than a parent to two wonderful students that I had the privilege of teaching- so much more than my gynecologist. She cared for me as if I were a member of her family. Often she would hold my hand and chat with me or give me some advice. She showed me such respect and love over the years. I was honored to know her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I worked for the family for just a few weeks, and it was a pleasure doing so. Martha has a very humble, kind, sweet, welcoming and warm personality that I will never forget. Although we have known each other for such short time, she will definitely be missed by me and my other coworkers. Thanks to Ellen and Sarah for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their mother's care plan which allows me to have met such a wonderful person as Martha.
My sincerest condolences to Ellen, Sarah and the rest of family. GOD bless you all.

Dr. Matloff was very instrumental in helping me become the Labor and Delivery nurse that I became. I loved working with her, she never hesitated to jump in and mop and clean a delivery room if need be on those crazy busy nights. You were a one of a kind person and I am honored that I got to work with you and be able to call you a friend. May you rest is peace Dr. Marty.
