Marty Brooks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2018.
Marty Brooks (maiden name, Martha Evans) was the eldest of five children. Marty said that her siblings found her bossy when they were growing up. This tendency held her in good stead, when at the age of twenty-eight, she took on the task of raising four kids on her own. Her children considered her a remarkable woman, which she was. Not only did she raise her children without a co-pilot, (divorced from first husband, Gerald Osburn in 1960) but she did it with panache! From world travel to Sunday picnics, Marty gave her children experiences to enrich their lives, even if it meant robbing Peter to pay Paul. And when she'd host a party, before being sent to bed, her kids were permitted to meander through the rooms taking in the sights and sounds of the jazz ensemble and guests—from all walks of life—dressed to the nines. Marty's children always came first. She attended every school function and always came to their aid whenever and wherever needed. In her forties, Marty remarried and her second husband, Irv Bookatz (the love of her life) encouraged her to return to school where she earned a doctorate in Research Psychology with honors from San Francisco State University. Marty is summed up best by long time family friend, Obeid Malikyar, "In my humble opinion, Marty was an adventuress with a real zest for life, a globetrotter who was not afraid to pack-up her young children and embark on a trip around the world. By the time I got to meet Marty she was in her golden years. Nevertheless, the glitter in her eyes, the swagger in her step, the sophistication in her speech and above all, her captivating beauty reminded me of the glamourous Hollywood stars of yesteryear." Marty Brooks (June 23, 1932 - December 17, 2018) is survived by her sister, Marilyn Sherman; her four children; Avalon, Renee, Lynden and Jacquelyn; and her three grandchildren; Desiree, Skyler and Alexondra Noelani. No longer of this world but still in it...her presence is felt everyday by her children and grandchildren.

What a special loving and accomplished woman. She was lucky to have such a wonderful and caring family. It says a lot that so much of her family spent so much time with her, lived so close to her, and shared their lives with her. I can't imagine how deeply she is missed. My heart and prayers goes out to Marty's family and friends. Best wishes to all. What a lovely way to remember Marty and share thoughts about her and her family.

What a gal. I too met her in her golden years, but was impressed with her style and quick wit. What a treasure to spend an afternoon laughing in her garden. She made a lovely home and her passing is felt beyond the miles that stood between us these last years. Hearing her voice on the telephone was even a joy. Thank you Renee for allowing me this treat of a lifetime by being my friend. She made you an amazing woman too and I see her in you more and more. Love to the whole fam and Cheers to the ol' girl! xxookb

A beautiful and eloquent obituary for an amazing woman, who continued to be absolutely stunning till the end. I hope she is dancing on a cloud with my dad. I will always treasure the years we spent together, the fun times on the boat, and her wise (and wild) insight on life and beyond. She will forever be missed and adored by everyone who knew her.

Beautiful way to memorialize our remarkable Matriarch. Kudos to the writers, compilers and editors of this very appropriate obituary. Like the rest of participants, I, too, miss Marty profoundly.

Not only was Marty fun-loving and easy to make laugh till she wet herself, she was one tough cookie, too. She is missed by many and enriched all our lives. May we all carry on with the pizazz, steely determination, and insight Marty showed us.
