Marvin Lipousky, 92, passed away peacefully on August 7 with his wife of 64 years, Betty, by his side.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 4, 1933, Marvin attended high school in Roxbury and then went on to study at Northeastern University. He joined the United States Air Force in the late 1950's where he met Betty, who was also serving at the time. They were married in 1961.
Marvin dedicated his life to service, spending 20 proud years in the United States military. He was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He attended munitions school at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado, and was later stationed in Columbus, Ohio, and Elmendorf Air Force base in Anchorage, Alaska. During the Vietnam War, Marvin was the munitions officer for the state of Alaska.
His final years in the military were spent with the Air National Guard in Bangor, Maine where he flew the F-101 "Voodoo" fighter-interceptor jet. While his children were attending the Stockton Springs Elementary School, the jets would occasionally fly over the playground on their way out over Penobscot Bay. At the time of his retirement in 1976, he had achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and had logged over 8,000 hours of flight time in various aircraft. In addition to flying jets, he served as a navigator aboard the the KC-135 Stratotanker traveling to overseas destinations and participating in historic missions including the airlift out of the Belgian Congo in the 1960s.
Following his military retirement, Marvin began a second career as a financial advisor, a role he held for over 25 years. During this time, he traded in his small watercraft for a vessel suited to boating on the open water. He and Betty both loved being on the waters of Penobscot Bay, and he eventually became the Harbor Master for Stockton Springs.
Marv and Betty were both passionate boating enthusiasts and long time volunteers with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Over the course of 20 years, they were dedicated to improving recreational boating safety and supporting Coast Guard operations. Together, they taught boating safety courses and conducted vessel inspections. Marvin was the Rear Commodore for the Northern Division of the Auxiliary, and Betty was a Division Captain. Even into their 80's, they cruised Penobscot Bay aboard their 53 foot motor yacht.
Marv was also a gifted handyman. There was little he couldn't repair if he had the right tools - and he always had the right tools or knew where he could buy them. He was a familiar face at Viking Lumber for over 50 years, as well as Hamilton Marine.
Marvin was predeceased by his twin sisters, Dorothy Bayne and Lila Levy; his daughter, Suzanne Lipousky; and his son, Michael Lipousky. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Lipousky; his daughter Rochelle Putnam and her husband, Jim Putnam; his sister, Marilyn Petrone; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at Mitchell-Tweedy Funeral Home in Bucksport, Maine at 1:00 on Tuesday, August 12th followed by a committal ceremony at Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Stockton Springs.
