Mary Anne Massey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2025.
Mary Anne Massey, 83, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, in Dunedin, Florida, where she and her husband of 63 years, Donald A. Massey, spent their winters.

Born to Walter and Elizabeth (Leach) Tubbs, Anne grew up in Japan, Germany, and Ypsilanti, Michigan, as the daughter of an Army officer. She graduated from Roosevelt High School (1959) and Eastern Michigan University (1963), later earning two master's degrees from EMU-in adaptive physical education and guidance counseling.

A consummate educator, Anne devoted 30 years to the Plymouth-Canton School District as a physical education, adaptive PE, and social studies teacher, and a high school and adult education guidance counselor before retiring in 1995. She was a mentor, role model, and advocate for countless people.

As an only child, Anne cherished her friendships and expressed love through thoughtful gestures and hosting gatherings. Always a leader, she was active in her college sorority, Delta Zeta, long into her working years. In retirement, she served as an officer in P.E.O., championing and fundraising for educational opportunities for women, spending free time playing bridge, boating and traveling with Don, and enjoying family.

Anne was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother-a true "wonder woman" who managed her home, career, and many friendships with grace and care. She was an energetic hostess, known for her warmth, attention to detail, and ability to make everyone feel welcome in her home or family cottage in Michigan.

Beside her husband, she is survived by daughters Kimberly (Robert) Schubert and Mary Lynn (James) Breyfogle; and grandchildren: Kathryn (Jean) Veliz, Jack (Saida) Schubert, Jamie and Kimberly Breyfogle.

She will be remembered for her compassion, laughter, and unwavering devotion to others. Memorial donations may be made to Plymouth-Canton Educational Foundation for an education scholarship "In memory of Mary Anne Massey" to continue her dedication to education.

Anne was a Delta Zeta sorority sister, and, I believe, one of the Delta Zeta officers when I pledged. Since we were both majoring in physical education and both had red hair, we quickly became friends. (She ragged on me the entire time I was pledging, but in a way that I knew she cared for me.) I remember during pledging that Anne and Don had some of our pledge class over to their apartment in married housing...something I hadn´t even know existed! After that, I tried never to miss an EMU home basketball game when her husband Don was playing. My sympathies to the entire family. Anne was someone whose genuineness and humor made you love her almost at once. I know how difficult her illness and ultimate death has been for those closest to her, and I grieve with you.

Anne (and Lynn) hosted a baby shower for me in their little cottage on the West side in 1989. Their social savvy, generosity and gracious kindness helped launch my family and welcome my son. What a haven of love, kindness and joy that little cottage was. Everyone was made to feel welcome and fed with grace. Rest now, Dear one.
