Mary Bancroft Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2009.
MARY ANN ADAM BANCROFT, 86, long-time resident of Houston, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009. A memorial service for Mary Ann will be held on Monday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston. She was an active member of the Seekers and Bridgebuilders at MDUMC. Mary Ann was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Marlin, Texas to David Adam and his wife Ottilie (Haug) Adam. After four sons and a daughter (who died in infancy), Mary Ann was a late-life gift to her parents and older brothers. Her merchant-tailor father died when she was only five years old, so she was raised by her mother. They were very close and struggled through the Depression years together in Marlin. After graduating from Marlin High School in 1940, Mary Ann moved to Houston to attend business school. She worked in Houston during the early 1940's as a secretary for various companies, including United Gas. She joined the Corps Club, a Houston organization that supported our troops during World War II, and met her future husband, a Baylor University medical student, whom she married on Nov. 11, 1944. The couple served in the Navy for 7 years, eventually settling in Houston. As their family grew, Mary Ann successfully managed a large household, including the family budget, helped her husband develop a large medical practice in Houston, and raised their four children. After 36 years of marriage, a divorce occurred and Mary Ann reentered the Houston workforce. She was employed by Great Southern Life Insurance Company. Her loyalty and dependability earned her many employee awards. After 12 years, she retired from Philadelphia American Life as Supervisor of Word Processing. For over 25 years, Mary Ann was a representative for Vanda Beauty Counselor skincare and cosmetics. She built a large base of clients whom she considered not just customers but her friends. A top saleswoman year after year, she received many Vanda Beauty Counselor awards, including Sales Representative of the Year. During those years, Mary Ann was an active member of American Businesswomen's Association (ABWA) and of Entre Nous Society. Mary Ann was a faithful wife and a loving mother to their three daughters and son. By her example, they learned honor, responsibility and independence. God opened many doors for Mary Ann, and, in her words, she "gratefully walked through them." Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and her sister, as well as her daughter Brenda Bancroft. She is survived by her daughter Milanne Bancroft of Oak Park IL; daughter Kay Bancroft Harris and husband Dale of Lafayette IN; and son Charles Russell Bancroft of Houston; her grandchildren, Matthew Johnson of Houston, Adam Harris of San Francisco CA, and Rebecca Palmer of Oak Park, IL; and great-grandson, Charles Tiernan Johnson of San Diego CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to MDUMC, Caring Forever Foundation General Fund, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston TX 77079.

We were taken by complete surprise when we heard of Mary Ann's passing.

Mary Ann was a faithful attender and a part of our 3:00 p.m. Church service group at Treemont. Mary Ann will be missed the others and ouselves as well.

On Wednesday July 1st, Jesus drew near and said, “Mary Ann how would you like to see the sunrise from the other side”

Sadly . . . Mary Ann’s journey is "Over"

Gratefully . . . Mary Ann’s toiling has "Ended"

Joyfully . . . Mary Ann is “Finally Home"

To The family Of Mary Ann Bancroft please accept our sincerest of sympathies.

Milanne, Kay and Russell,

I was so sad to hear of the death of both your parents, and can only imagine how hard it must be on you to have it happen so close together. Although I haven’t seen any of you in decades and your Mom in several years, I have fond memories of the times our families spent together, even as you were all older and baby sitting our crew of 5 that your Dad delivered! And of course, I have very special feelings for Mary Ann, whom I was named after.

It was great talking to you tonight, Kay, and I really look forward to receiving any photos you find of all of us at the beach. I’m sorry I won’t be at the Memorial Service in person, but I will be there in my thoughts and prayers. Your Mom was such a sweet, lovely lady and I can still hear her unique and distinct voice in my head. I imagine she’s already reunited with your Dad and my Mother and they’re up there right now rehashing good times!

My prayers are with all of you and your children.

Milanne, Kay Lynn & Russell:

Your mom was the epitome of grace, charm and kindness. You are fortunate to have enjoyed all these years with her. I always liked your dad a lot; he was an appealing character to me, as a young guy hunting, etc. with my dad and his friends. Plus I appreciate your dad's work getting me into the world.

Bill McKinley is in New Hampshire and is sorry to miss the service. Best wishes to you all.

Russell, I remember your mother as very gracious and she made me feel very comfortable at a holiday dinner - many, many years ago! I met your sisters there too, and I send my condolences to all of you.

Milanne, Kay & Russell --

I can so remember the first summer your family visited ours in San Diego and how we teased y'all about your Texas drawls. My parents so loved your Mom and their visits to Galveston and crabbing at the beach house and your Mom's yearly visits to their condo on the beach in San Diego years later. My Mom was always so excited when Maryanne would visit and made sure we all came down to the condo to say "howdy." Occasionally when I use my mother's personal cookbook I see notations for "Maryanne Bancroft's Recipe" and of course the date -- there are quite a few. They were friends for over 50 years and I know, because I am the daughter that your father delivered. Your Mom was quite a special lady. She had the sweetest voice and nicest nature. Penny's daughter, Brenda, when she heard the news of your Mom's passing said, "Oh Grandma will be so happy -- she's been waiting for Maryanne at the beach!" I'm sure they will enjoy many a Happy Hour together. I know my brothers and sisters join me in sending our condolances.

Russell, Kay & Milanne, we are so sad to learn of the death of your mom. She was a precious lady. Although we didn't get to see her often, she was one of Martha's favorite cousins. We know that God is with all of you and your children.

Kay, thank you for calling us the other day.

Blessings !

As I was reading the paper this morning, I noticed that Mrs. Bancroft had passed, and thought,,,The Dr. that delivered me was Dr. Bancroft?? I wonder if they are related., and I read on and found out that she was indeed related. I then looked down to my left and saw Dr. Bancrofts passing as well. I was soo sad. I know what you guys are going through having lost both my parents at an early age, and now my 48 yr old brother that Dr. Bancroft also delivered. May God Bless you, and hold you tight. It is so hard to lose a loved one.

Sincerely,

Michelle (Fodell) Speetzen

Dear Russell, Kay, Milanne and families,
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the deaths of both of your parents. I so enjoyed visiting with your Mom and swapping stories about all those older brothers we both had to deal with. Take care of each other. She loved all of you so much.
