Mary Bernard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 2 to Sep. 3, 2007.
CHATHAM - Mary Frances (McDonough) Bernard, formally of Chatham and Bridgewater, died peacefully surrounded by her family, Aug. 31, 2007.

Born May 28, 1910 in Rutland, Vt., she was the beloved wife of the late Sergius Bernard and the devoted and loving mother of Sergius, Virginia, Jude, James & Stephen.

She was also the cherished grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, James and Virginia (Gee) McDonough of North Adams and her brothers and sisters.

Mary lived her life with grace, compassion and good humor.

She will always be remembered for her expansive organic garden that was inspired by the summers she spent as a child on her grandparent's farm in Vermont.

Along with gardening, she enjoyed canning, bowling, puzzles and volunteering in the Catholic Church including teaching first communion at Holy Redeemer in Chatham.

She was also known by family and friends as the person who suggested the name Cape Cod Potato Chips to her sons, the company's founders.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at Holy Redeemer Church, 57 Highland Ave., Chatham, on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at 10 a.m.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham.

Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Harwich.

Donations may be made to the Bridgewater Raynham Scholarship Fund in care of Bridgewater/Raynham Regional High School, Bridgewater, Mass.
