I had the great honor of knowing the wonderful, generous Cavanagh family back in the late '70s and early '80s. (I was going to school at then Rosary College, now Dominican University, with Mary Cay's youngest sister Megan.) There were so many times I spent over at the family home in River Forest I couldn't begin to count. The entire family was always welcoming, joyful and great fun to be around. When my wife Bonnie alerted me to the death notice I was saddened and immediately thought of not just Mary Cay, but the entire family of loving people. My heart goes out to you all during this rough time and I hope you can come to grips with this tragedy. It isn't the best solace to know how loved Mary Cay was and you all are, but it is true nonetheless. Take care of yourselves and each other. You are one of the nicest families I've ever had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and knowing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I can hear Mary Cay's laugh vividly in my head and I hope I never lose that memory. She is truly an amazing wonderful person that was taken from this earth too soon. I am so lucky to have crossed her path in this life since I am a better person for having known her. My heart goes out to her wonderful caring family. May God give you the strength to get through this.

I only recently met Mary Cay, but as you can imagine, she made a lasting impression. She wanted to come out to the lake for a boat ride and see the sunset over the water. She was surrounded by friends and family, and I was grateful to be a small part of such an enormous evening. The laughter, the love and more laughter from that night is what I will always remember. Thanks Mary Cay for letting me share your sunset...it was a beautiful ride.
Laughing until the ride ends, and the sun sets...

I just heard this sad news and my thoughts and prayers are with you, her family. I was fortunate enough to work with Mary Cay for many years at Delta and she was always one of the bright lights of the "SLC Res" leadership team. Her sense of humor and laughter touched our hearts during the many good years and helped sustain the SLC team through the tough years. Mary Cay was definitely one of a kind. Mary Cay was more than a supervisor at Delta. She was a "sista-friend" and someone I admired greatly. Few people can have the effect she had on so many. I met Mary Cay in 1974 while enrolled in a study abroad progam and her upbeat attitude and zest for life never seemed to fade. Over the years we would see each other at reunions, and she truly was the life of any gathering. Late this past summer, many of us gathered again in Massachusetts, but even though she was not able to attend. We called her from the party and she spoke with many of us, and still, she had such life and never once uttered anything negative. Recounting many events and occurences from long ago, she once again stole the show.
God bless you MC, heaven won't be the same with your humor and thanks for just being the person you were.

I'm so devastated by her leaving us. Mary Cay was my supervisor at Delta Airlines for a few years. I adored her and called her "my Super Duper". She contributed so much to my life. When the notice came into my email yesterday a miraculous thing happened. I was scrapbooking and among the things I found in the shoe box was the wonderful book mark she had given me.It's dark blue covered with stars. Says "Making The Difference". On the back she signed "Thank you, Sonis !!". Can't stop thinking about her,
Love, Sonia Smith

I never met Cay, but work with her sister Liz. Liz and her family have been devoted to Cay and her comfort and quality of life. It is clear to me that Liz's love for Cay is deep and they are lucky to have each other. Liz told me that October 23rd will now be a celebration of Liz's birth and of Cay's life.
