Mary Clanton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2025.
Mary, affectionately known as "Lou" by her family members, was born to Nathaniel and Mary Ollie Nash in Minter City, Mississippi. Mary relocated to Gary, Indiana after graduating from high school.

Mary met and married Vernon Clanton and they had three children together. Mary retired from the Gary Public School System, where she was employed for over 20 years in various classroom and office positions. After discovering retirement was unfulfilling, she became employed by the Gary Neighborhood Service Center as a receptionist/intake coordinator.

Mary enjoyed and loved her past and current church families. She was an active member of the Mothers Board at Peace Emmanuel Baptist Church during her healthiest days.

Mary loved life, family and always had a fun time. Mostly, her love and Faith has been in God and the path in which her life had taken. She did not waver or become discouraged. Her conversation always included, "I asked God...".

Mary is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also, two sisters, an aunt and many cousins, and friends.

Let us not forget the lessons we learned and the passion she exuded in every task she undertook whether it was dressing to the nines, bowling or dancing. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation Friday, August 15, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Funeral service 11:00 a.m. All services at Peace Emmanuel Baptist Church 1201 Chase Street Gary, IN 46404, Pastor J.R. McDonald officiating. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.
