Mary Cleary Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 14, 2025.
Mary Ellen Cleary (née North), passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of April 5, 2025, in Vero Beach, Florida. She was 91 years old. A beloved mother, wife, daughter, aunt, and cousin to many in her family, Mary Ellen's life was marked by deep faith, enduring love for her family, and a lifelong commitment to education and service.

Born on June 23, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary Ellen pursued her passion for learning at the University of Florida at Gainesville, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Her dedication to teaching led her to a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher in Coral Gables, Florida. Later, she continued to share her knowledge and care as a substitute teacher in the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. In addition to her professional life, Mary Ellen embraced the role of homemaker with grace and devotion.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband, William A. Cleary Jr., Captain, USNR. Their marriage was a testament to partnership and faith. Together they built a home filled with warmth and purpose.

She is survived by her daughter Anne; her sons Bill and Ted; and five wonderful grandchildren who brought immense joy into her life.

A woman of unwavering Catholic faith, Mary Ellen was deeply involved in the Church throughout her life. She was a long-time member of St. Patrick's Parish in Rockville, Maryland, where she volunteered at St. Jude's Elementary School and served as a substitute teacher. Her spiritual journey included a pilgrimage to the site of the apparition of The Blessed Virgin Mary at Our Lady of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina-an experience that profoundly touched her heart.

Mary Ellen prayed faithfully every day and attended daily Mass as long as she was physically able. In later years, she continued to receive the Eucharist weekly at home-a testament to the central role faith played throughout her life.

She found joy in meeting new people and forming lasting friendships wherever she went. Travel brought her happiness and broadened her world view, but it was time spent with family that she cherished most.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Mary Ellen's life was held on April 10, 2025, at St. Helen's Catholic Church located at 2000 20th Street in Vero Beach, Florida. The service began at 10:00 AM and concluded at 10:45 AM. Arrangements were facilitated by Cox-Giffords Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach.

As a devout Catholic whose life reflected compassion and devotion, our faith tells us that Mary Ellen is now reunited with all her loved ones in the House of The Lord. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
