Mary Cunningham Obituary
ELON - Mary Shaw Robeson Cunningham, 91, of Elon, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2006.
Funeral arrangements to be announced at a later date.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Horace H. Cunningham.
A graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College, Mrs. Cunningham earned her undergraduate degree in education. As a young adult, she taught math and coached the girl's basketball team at Greenville High School in NC. During these years she completed her master's degree in history at UNC-Chapel Hill. Later she became the librarian at Western Alamance High School and acquired a master's degree in Library Science from UNC-G. She was an active member of the Elon Community Church, a former president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for key women educators and a former co-president of the Stony Creakers.
Mrs. Cunningham is survived by three daughters, Jama Rhett Whitehurst of Tarboro, Anne Chalmers Cunningham of Elon, and Margaret Settle Bumgartner of Charleston, S.C.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Elon Community Church, P.O. Box 625, Elon, N.C. 27244 or Hospice Home of Alamance/ Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
