Mary Edmunds Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2014.
Mary Ellen Edmunds was born in Blue Island, Illinois, on September 1, 1950, to Charlotte Louise (Heinzelman) and Robert Henry Edmunds.

She passed away October 10, 2014, at age 64 at Houston Northwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, after a brief respiratory illness. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her older sister Nancy Agafitei (married to Rick) and younger brother Paul Edmunds (married to Tracy), two nieces (Kerry Edmunds and Courtney Brush), a nephew (Victor Agafitei), a great-niece (Kylee Blackmon) and four great-nephews (Ryder and Kane Blackmon, and Tyler and Colt Brush).

Mary attended First Lutheran Elementary School in Blue Island, and Maine East High School in Park Ridge. After graduation, she worked as a nurses' aide and a licensed practical nurse in a number of nursing homes. In 1991, she earned a Bachelor's degree in nursing from Oakton Community College. Following this, she worked in the Alzheimer's unit at St. Matthew's Lutheran Home in Park Ridge, Illinois until her retirement. In 2009, Mary relocated to Houston, Texas, to live closer to her sister Nancy's family.

Mary was an avid reader. Together with her mom, she also loved to knit, crochet, and do ceramics and china painting. She had a beautiful voice, and she belonged to several church choirs in her lifetime.

She was a lifelong Lutheran and belonged to Lutheran congregations wherever she lived, most recently Hosanna Lutheran in Houston, Texas. At Hosanna she was a member of the adult Sunday school class, the Wednesday Bible study, the monthly book discussion group, and the Mission Focus Team. She was a faithful steward in her giving to the church and to children's charities. Her final gift was a skin tissue donation made through LifeGift that has the potential to help 50 to 60 people.

Services will be at Hosanna Lutheran Church on Thursday, October 16, at 11:00 am. Burial will be at First Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hosanna Lutheran Church, 16526 Ella Blvd., Houston TX 77090.

I went to school with Paul. I do remember her name. My thoughts and prayers will be with the Edmund family.

Even though many miles and years separate us I still have vivid memories of the times we spent with the Edmund family. Nancy and I were classmates and friends, Mary and my sister Gusti were classmates and friends so it was natural for our families to spend much time together. From dinners to camping trips, from football in the yard to butterfly collecting we were usually together. I am so sorry to hear about Mary's passing. I always thought we would get together again one day. Nancy, Paul I will be thinking about you and praying for you and your family.

Mary, my most unique cousin. From the early years I had always wondered if she and Barbara were "switched at birth". Mary was always fun to be around and she and Grace were wonderful together. I always enjoyed the conversations that we had on a too infrequent basis. She is now with the Lord and at peace, a truly lovely person and angel to all she served over the years.

Nancy, Paul and families,
Larry and I are very sad that we lost Mary Ellen to the earthly life but we know the she is free of pain in heaven. Nita is surely welcoming her through the gates of heaven along side your mom and dad.

Mary and I were classmates as well as good childhood friends at First Lutheran Church. I still have a piece of a ceramic animal she made for me when we moved away. Had happy memories with sleep overs, camping trips with both our families.

To Nancy and Paul and families:

We are so sad to hear of your sisters death. My memories of Mary go way back to our days at First Lutheran church and school, and also occasional family gatherings.
Those days are long past, but our bond as family continues.
We keep you in our thoughts and prayers during this time of loss.
