Mary Ellen Heltzel, 79, of Los Angeles, California, (formerly of Warren and Cleveland, Ohio) passed away peacefully on June 14, 2023, in Pasadena, California, after an extended illness.

She was born on March 13, 1944, to William and Helen (Szabo) Filkorn, in Warren, Ohio, and was one of eight children. Her parents and siblings instilled in her a love of art, music, cooking and travel. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Warren, where she formed many cherished lifetime friendships, and attended Kent State University. She lived in Northeast Ohio for most of her life, moving to Los Angeles in 2021.

She created a lifetime body of artwork, primarily watercolors and pastels. She was a licensed Realtor in the greater Cleveland area for over 20 years, working with agencies Keller Williams Inc., Howard Hanna, Century 21, and others. She was also a docent at The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Melissa Heltzel, and son-in-law, Todd Myers, of Los Angeles; her sister, Helen Parker of Florida; her brother, Paul David Filkorn, of San Francisco; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews across the U.S.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband John N Heltzel III; her brothers, William J Filkorn II, Thomas R Filkorn, Carl J Filkorn, Robert L Filkorn; and sister, Nancy Bindas.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish (232 Seneca Ave NE, Warren, Ohio) on Thursday, July 27; calling hours at 2 p.m., service at 3 p.m. Her final resting place will be with her family at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, Ohio.
