Mary Flannery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2017.
Mary Magdalene Flannery (Maggie) passed away peacefully Thursday, April 13, 2017. Although she was born in San Antonio in 1921, she spent her formative years in Kalamata, Greece. Maggie always turned heads from the time she was a little girl and never entered a room unnoticed. Her passions were many as witnessed by anyone who received a painting from her. She painted walls, pillowcases, clothes, and toy chests. There is nothing she would not paint. She was the daughter of Tom D. Anthony, one of the founding fathers of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church and the downtown jewel, Manhattan Cafe, which opened in 1912. Her bragging rights varied from the SACC Tennis Hall of Fame, being a docent at the McNay Art Museum to Jr. League volunteer and member of the Philoptochos. Her art work spanned throughout San Antonio area inclusive of LBJ Library, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the McNay Art Museum, Club Giraud and San Antonio Botanical Gardens. She surprised everyone when she killed two turkeys with one bullet as she wore khakis she had painted with deer and quail in a field of blue bonnets. She took pride in being able to shoot a deer and dress it. She loved the Greek Church and never said no to volunteering. She even introduced elementary school children to Greek history by dressing up as a Greek Royal Guard. In the early forties while studying at Incarnate Word College she attained the award for selling the most war bonds and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Maggie was preceded in death by her adoring husbands: Ernest Couloheras, J. Barclay Chamberlain and William W. Flannery; her mother and father, Photini Kouchomandopoulos and Tom Anthony; her sister, Eula Anthony; her brother, Dan Anthony; sons-in-law: Marion F. Craig and Rudy Jimenez. She lives in the memories and hearts of her daughters: Frances Chamberlain, Georgia Chamberlain and husband, John Foulkrod, and Louise Barclay Jimenez; her sister in law, Chrissy Anthony; nieces and nephews, Tina Weiner and husband, Brian; Denise Soodhalter; Madeline Kazzaz and husband, Nabil; Tom Anthony and wife, Ruth; Lisa Alexander and husband, Doug; Nick Anthony; Barclay Anthony and wife, Kristi; William (Buddy) Flannery, Jr.; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many great nieces and nephews, and her faithful friend and helper, Olga Esparza. It was good fortune that she enjoyed the company of Bill Haight the last year of her life. Although she was planning a Safari we hope you will join us in honoring her life at the Trisagion at Porter Loring on McCullough on Tuesday, April 18, at 7 pm viewing being held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The funeral is Wednesday, April 19 at 10 AM at St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 2504 N. St. Mary's, 78212 burial following at Mission Burial Park South. In lieu of lowers, donations may be made to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church Renovation Fund.

Frances and Georgia: I am so sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral for your dear and wonderful mother. I was always delighted to see her, and whenever I ran into her, we had long catch-up talks. She was so very proud of you both and spoke of you with enthusiasm and joy. Her long life was a testament to her unceasing curiosity, her genuine love for people, and her passion to live life to its fullest. She cared about so many people, and she "mothered" all of the friends you brought home.

I will never forget the first time I came to your house for dinner. Maybe we were in fourth or fifth grade, and your mother decided we (Mary Martha and I) needed to learn about artichokes and how to eat them. She very carefully and deliberately gave us instruction on how to peal the leaves, dip them in butter, put them aside in a designated bowl, and then afterward how to remove the choke to enjoy the heart.

Maya Angelou said that people may forget what you said and forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Maggie always made us feel loved and important and cared for, and we will miss her profoundly.

My heart aches to hear of the falling asleep of dear Aunt Maggie, and I'm very sorry for your family's loss. Please pass on my condolences to everyone.
Aunt Maggie breathed life into all she did and impacted our family and everyone who came in touch with her in many wonderful ways. For me, it was the passing on of our culture. I remember specifically the time she taught us the phrase den byrazie and how to this day my brother and I still remember it. And also the many stories of our family history that gave us a glimpse into our rich past. These are just some of the many she was able to leave a big impact on us and many many more. I loved her very much and hope that we can continue on her wonderful legacy
May her memory be eternal!

With love,
Nicholas Anthony

Ms. Maggie, one of a kind. Strong, energetic, beautiful, inspiring, colorful, creative and full of life and I only got to know her in her later years. I recall her invite to the Greek Festival at her church and the tour she gave us of the church and the history of past family members, how very proud she was of both the church and her Greek heritage. I feel very blessed to have received one of her beautiful and colorful pieces of art work on our wedding day, I will forever cherish it. Georgia, Frances and Louise our prayers are with you and your families.

Aunt Maggie, your image looms so large in my youthful memories of the festive celebrations on Terrell Rd., sleep overs with Francis and Georgia, getting much needed lessons on etiquette, seeing latest art work projects and listening to colorful stories! Your style was unmatched always incorporating bold colors reflective of your personality and exuberance and love of life and adventure! You had such a rich fulfilling life even though you had sad moments with the passing of wonderful Uncle Ernest, Uncle Barclay and dear Bill Flannery. You will be sorely missed by all, but our memories of you are indelibly imprinted!!

Maggie was a very caring person. Lots of fond memories like the time I was at Louise's house and I sat down on her porch swing and I broke it and fell through on to the porch floor I was so embarassed. Maggie was so concerned I was hurt and Louise and I just laughed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Connie and Denny Huston and Family

I knew Maggie all my life but we really made friends on a trip to Southeast Asia after I was grown. We sat together for hours and told each other everything. I adored her and was so sad, stricken really, to read her obituary. She was a glamourous, fun-loving pal and I loved her.

Georgia,

I am truly sad about Aunt Maggie; although she is a true legend that will live forever in our hears and minds. She was larger than life and so fun. She had style that no one could match She never lost her lust for life or her beauty. I would be so lucky to be remembered the way we will always remember your mother.

I love you,
Ellyce
