Mary Gibson Popwell Goldsmith, age 93, died of Vascular Dementia on October 30th, 2018 in Emory Hospital Hospice in Atlanta, GA.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Julie Goldsmith of Lilburn, GA, her son Jim Goldsmith of Dallas, GA, and wife Rebecca Goldsmith of Dallas, GA, her grandson, Ben Goldsmith of Beaumont, TX, her grandson, Brian Goldsmith and wife, Kelly Goldsmith and their son, Caleb Goldsmith (great grandson) of Kennesaw, GA. She is also survived by six nephews, Joe Corley, Steven Harris, Denny Harris, Mark Harris, Mike Westbrook and Craig Westbrook.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Goldsmith, Sr of Decatur, GA; her sister Ouida Corley of Atlanta, her sister, Kate Zeigler of Soperton, GA and her sister, Peggy Harris of Knoxville, TN.
She was born on November 20, 1924 in in Thermal, Alabama to parents Ouida Goss Popwell and Joseph Gibson Popwell. She grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Auburn University in 1945 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She completed her Dietetics Internship at Peter Brent Brigham Hospital in Boston, MA after college and then worked as a dietitian at various hospitals in Atlanta including Grady, Crawford Long, Piedmont and Emory. She co-authored a book on Managing Diabetes for Indigent People with Dr. Jack Davidson while at Grady Hospital. She and Jim were married on October 22, 1949 at St. Marks Church in Atlanta and were blessed with a daughter and a son.
Her family and church were of prime importance to her. She loved to help others and was deeply involved at church throughout her life. Family and friends will remember her as a loving caring person who always had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face.
Visitation will be from 11 am to 12 pm on Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 at the Floral Hills Funeral Home in Tucker, GA with a funeral service to follow at 12 PM in the Floral Hills Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Rodney Webb will officiate.
The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas J. Mizell, Shawn, the Emory Integrated Memory Care Clinic staff and the Emory Hospital Hospice staff for their loving care and concern.

I just saw this while looking on the website at another obituary. My sympathies to Julie and Jim. My mother, Mary also, loved your mom so much and considered her a wonderful friend.
