I knew Mary and Steven back in the late 70s.
They made quite an impression on me because of their Weave of Fine Qualities.
I found them to both be warm, kind, and disciplined people who Loved To Learn.
They invested themselves deeply in their pursuits of knowledge and yet remained serious and humble with a bit of humor.
I liked them both greatly and found them to be among the kindest and most honest people I have known.
Fine souls . If you met them. You were better for it

I was a fan of Mary’s even before I met her as I knew of her through my friendship with her sister Ramona. I remember my friend being very proud of her sister and with good reason. What an accomplished person in every way that counts. I have not seen her in recent years but have felt close because of her beautiful reading of the Bible Lesson-Sermon at the Mother Church. The love and compassionate understanding in her voice was always so comforting and inspiring. What a gift to have known such a wonderful person.

Lovely service, filled with the same loving compassion and care I always felt from Mary. So grateful, Laurie Haas

Descriptors that come to mind when I think of Ms. Gottschalk: brilliant, kind, nurturing, educator, "Renaissance" woman, welcoming, skater, protector of delicious homemade cookies from persistent dog, cultivator of roses. I am hopeful those roses are getting ready to emerge and bloom. Condolences to Jennie and Laird.

Mary was a wonderful woman. I had met her son Laird through a mutual friend a few years before, but Mary became our landlord at the pink house in Inman Square around 2006. She was wonderful to deal with, as she was trusting and treated us with so much respect, and truly became a friend of our family. Over the 11 years that we stayed at the pink house, we took care of it as it were our own, with me, not being just a tenant, but sort of a handyman to take care of as much as I could for her. We loved her visits and would share a cup of tea sometimes and catch up if she happened to stop by. Mary was so intelligent and levelheaded and always pleasant to see. Her passing is a loss to the world, she was a truly beautiful spirit. She will be missed by us.

Mary and her family were so good to me when I attended Wellesley College- She would invite me over, give me rides and be that wonderful, loving person who you could turn to for anything. She definitely impacted my life and I am happy I knew her. She even introduced me to Liz Hart so I had a wonderful place to live while studying in London. Love to all and thanks for sharing your mother with me! Lisa Hess Rice

Mary and I first met in Geneva, Switzerland. She had just graduated from Principia High School, and I from Principia College. She was studying cello at the conservatory-and taking lessons and competing in figure skating. I studied literature at the university. It was my pleasure to watch her perform and to meet her occasionally for meals in some low-cost restaurant. We saw each other at church services there, as well. When we returned to the States after a year, she and I attended a coming-out ball in Baltimore, my hometown. Not longer after, I visited her and her family near Philadelphia. After a few years, we both ended up at the same church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and served briefly together on its board. Mary was a person of great talent, intellect, and warmth, as was her brilliant husband Steve, with whom I had several insightful-and humorous-conversations.

In 1968, she was my German teacher in college. Immediately, I gained a love of the language because of her joyous way of teaching. When she moved later that year, we missed her teaching, but the foundation she gave me has lasted a lifetime.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Frau Gottschalk over the years when she substituted at WHS in our German classes. She was kind and very dedicated to teaching; her love for language came through. Condolences to Jenny and all of Frau Gottschalk´s family members.
