Mary Eleanor Hempton (Osborn)

February 15, 1931-Feb 12, 2025

Mary Hempton (93), passed away surrounded by her loving family at her home in Ashburn, VA.

She was reunited with many loved ones including her parents Robert and Amy Osborn, husband Gordon Hempton, first husband Dr. Bruce Butler Jr., and sons Danny and Jimmy upon her entrance to heaven.

Born in Clinton, Iowa and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, Mary was a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. She was a two-time state champion for Maryland High School Basketball. She received a full academic scholarship and a PEO scholarship to Bowling Green University where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. While raising six children, she became a matriarch in the Vienna, Virginia community and became a second mother for many of her children's friends. She was active in PEO, DAR, and her church, and shared her baked goods and time with numerous other organizations.

She had a passion for genealogy and traveled far and wide to learn more about her family history. She never stopped learning. She knew every flower, ancestors name, and family recipe by heart. She rarely lost a card game. You could feel her love through her smile, and she never hesitated to share how she felt about those she loved and to say how proud she was of her family. She only slowed down at the very end.

She is survived by her children Judy Shook (Bill), Bruce Butler (Ellen), Larry Butler (Melanie), Mary Beth Butler; grandchildren Taylor Carroll (Jeff), Kasey Simon (Michael), Bruce Butler, Drew Butler, Marisa Butler; daughter-in-law Lori Butler (Gary); great-grandchildren William, Logan, Quynn, James Carroll (Taylor Carroll),

Emeline and Teddy Simon (Kasey Simon), stepchildren Robert Hempton (Ellen), Gordon Hempton (Cate), Wendy Friel (Dan); step-grandchildren Alex Hempton (Dan), Sarah Hempton, Laura Hempton, Katherine Hempton, and Emily Hempton in heaven, Gordon Hempton (Andi), Abby Lindquist (Evan), Rose Friel (Sean), Joseph Friel; step-great-grandchildren Gordon and Ruby Hempton (Gordon Hempton), and Asher Lindquist (Abby Lindquist).

Her family is full of gratitude for her kindness, strength, and unwavering love. She will be greatly missed. In honor of her memory, donations may be made to:

PEO International: 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312, or to the National Audubon Society: ATTN: Donations, 225 Varick Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10014.

A family celebration of life will be held in the spring.
