Mary Horn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2024.
Our mother, Mary Catherine Godsey Horn was born on June 11th 1944 to William and Geneva Godsey in Kansas City, Missouri. She was an only child and grew up in the Grandview, Missouri area. On September 26th, 1964 she married our Poppa, John Wayne Horn, an AirForce GI stationed at Richards-Gebaur Base in Missouri. In 1965 Cecelia was born followed by Amelia in 1970. As children, we lived all over the western part of the United States. Mom was very much a Military spouse, putting in roots for our family with each new move. She always established herself as an independent woman, wife and mother. She was an Avon lady, worked at banks, the Commissary on base and in a bakery. She learned to decorate cakes and made each of our birthdays extra special with her beautiful cake decorations. At her heart she was a writer and was published in magazines and newspapers. She knew how to "grow where she was planted". She joined bowling leagues, a theater group and volunteered her time to better the lives of people and pets. She was fiercely independent and resisted retirement, moving finally to Yukon, Oklahoma to be near her girls and grandchildren. These last years she reinvented her life and "grew where she was planted" yet again. She joined a writers group, volunteered at a local nursing home calling bingo, volunteered at the Pets and People Thrift Store two days a week, hosted monthly dinner and cards with friends at her home, planted a garden each summer, fed many stray and wild animals, baked cakes for her neighbors and spent time with her family. Mary is survived by her daughters, Cecelia Hendrix and Amelia Moore and her Sons-In-Love , Terry Huston and Robert Rizzo. Mama had four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; John Moore and his wife Danielle Moore, Steven Moore (fiancé Hannah Tucker) and their daughter Alexandria Moore, Hannah Hendrix (fiancé Michael Pipan) and their son Beau Pipan, and Eden Rizzo and her significant other, Michael Rinehart. She left this world on August 13,2024. She was the strongest woman, and taught us to be strong, independent and loving, as she was.

I'll never forget meeting Mary. We liked each other right off. She was 14 and I was 13. She was my first cousin My parents let me spend a night with her when we were visiting. We snuck some cigarettes horrible Salem's and smoked them. We were bad girls together.

Sweet, precious Mama. How we miss your voice and your laughter! The world feels so different and empty without you here. I love you you so much Mama.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Mary when she lived in the Branson, MO area, and when she came back for visits. She loved it here and had lots of friends, but also loved her family in OK. She had a merciful heart and always went out of her way to help others in their time of need. She always had a good story to tell and seemed interested in so many things life had to offer. I will deeply miss her and her pleasant soul. My heart goes out to all who are suffering her loss. She will never be forgotten.

Such a sweet friend and so thankful that I got to know her when she lived in the Branson area and when she would come back to visit, she loved this area. She had a merciful heart and compassion to help others in their time of need. I will deeply miss her and it is hard for me to except that she is gone. I considered her a great blessing. My heart goes out to all who loved her.

Mary was a very special lady. I only knew her for 12 years, but felt very blessed to have known her as a friend. We met while she lived in Lampe, Missouri and often went to lunch on Sunday afternoons. She was a very independent and a fun person to be around. After she moved to Oklahoma we kept in touch with cards and letters. I will miss her. My prayers and condolences go to her two daughters and the rest of her family. Susie Brown

I met Mary at the Pets and People thrift store where I also volunteer. I found her to be delightful. I admired her determination, she hardly seemed her age. I´m saddened that she´s passed and I will truly miss her!
