Mary Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 10, 2025.
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Jones (Cocker), 99, of Lenox Massachusetts, formerly of Gloversville, New York, passed away peacefully at her home on December 3, 2025, surrounded by love.

Betty was born October 19, 1926 in Framingham, Massachusetts, where she grew up and attended school. After she completed high school in 1944, she was accepted into the Massachusetts College of Art, but chose to go to nursing school instead. She attended the Newton-Wellesley School of Nursing. At the time she graduated in 1947, she was the Obstetrics Assistant Head Nurse at the Newton- Wellesley Hospital and continued in that position after graduation.

Betty met the love of her life, William "Bill" Jones on a blind date and they were married in September of 1950. They moved to Syracuse while Bill finished college and Betty worked at the Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. The couple eventually moved to the Gloversville/Johnstown area, where Betty worked at Nathan Littuaer hospital for several months before they started a family.

While raising her four children, Betty volunteered in the community, including as a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the board of the YWCA. She was able to return to artistic endeavors once her children were older. She became a popular artist in the Gloversville area and was the lead artist at the annual Art Show more than once. She also had an art show at Kimball Farms in Lenox, Massachusetts after leaving Gloversville and showed her art in local shows around western Massachusetts. Betty and Bill were avid travelers, and while many of her paintings depicted scenes from the Gloversville area and surroundings, she also included many other places she visited in her artwork. As a lifelong learner, she formed a study club in the 1960s, took classes at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and chaired the education committee at Kimball Farms Senior Living Community in Lenox where she lived for the past 20 years.

Betty is survived by her four children, Peter Jones (Jean), Nancy Dolge (Richard), Cynthia Jones, and Susan Moses (Thomas), her sister Shirley Craighead, nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill in 2023, and her brothers John Cocker and Bill Cocker.
