NEW BEDFORD - Walter J. Banas, 89, of Acushnet, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Irene (Zysk) Banas, married 65 years; and son of the late Kazimierz and Victoria (Wlodyka) Banas.

He was born in New Bedford and lived in Acushnet the past 37 years. He was a WW II Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Edison and the USS Sehbella. He was the recipient of many awards and citations.

He was formerly employed as an instructor in the Machine Shop at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational High School until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the OLPH Seniors, the Polish American Veterans of WW II and the American Legion Post I.

Survivors include his wife; his son, Paul Banas and his wife, Diane of New Bedford; and his daughter, Sharon Canto and her husband, John of Raynham; two grandchildren, Shawn and his wife, Beth and Matthew and his wife, Anne; two great-grandchildren Fox and Xen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Andrew, John, Sophie and Joseph Banas and Mary Luby and Tillie Bzdyra.

Visitation will be this evening 5-7 PM at Rock Funeral Home. His Funeral will be from the Funeral Home on Thursday at 8 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 9 AM. Interment Sacred Heart Cemetery.
