MARY LECOMTE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2021.
Mary E. Le Comte (nee Kuhl), 96, lifelong Des Plaines resident, passed away at The Reserve at Arlington Heights on Mar 29, 2021, due to a stroke. Mary, or Betty, was born Sep 8, 1924, to Alfred and Esther (Hedler) Kuhl on a farm at Golf and Milwaukee roads that later became Ridgewood Cemetery. Mary attended North School, Des Plaines Jr. High and Maine Township High (Class of '42). Her first job was at Prince Castle in downtown Des Plaines where she worked as a counter girl starting at .20/hour. There she met George Le Comte. They were married in 1942 and had one son, George Junior, before George enlisted in WWII. He was killed in action in 1944 leaving Mary widowed at the age of 20 with a 2-year-old. Mary worked for the U.S. Treasury Dept. and General Services Admin. in Chicago for 29 years, retiring in 1971. She bought a home at age 22 that she owned for 71 years. She invested in real estate, becoming a landlord when other women were homemakers. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, talking and chocolate. She is survived by daughter-in-law, Patricia Le Comte; granddaughter, Kathleen Le Comte (John Lupton); and great-grandchildren Lydia, Claudia and Audrey Lupton, all of Springfield, IL; and grandson, Michael (Katherine) Le Comte, and great-grandchildren Megan, Ashley and Matthew Le Comte, all of Pompano Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Rosemary; husband, S/Sgt. George J. Le Comte; and son, George J. Le Comte Jr. Private services with interment at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.

Through very unfortunate circumstances, I lost touch with Mary after she was admitted to hospital live-in care. Mary and I were next door neighbour's and good friends for 34 years, seeing each other most every day. We would talk often and shared in veggie gardening, and she would instruct me about native plants and which bugs did what, and there was of course much more we grew to know about each other. In 2016, I relocated, which was just prior to Mary being moved out of her home for specialized care. It is sad that we lost touch so completely, and it's even more sad that I just learned she died last April. I know I will see her again.
