Mary Metzger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10, 2002.
Mary Lee Metzger, 81, of Morro Bay died peacefully in her sleep at her home Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, from the resulting symptoms of a tumor in her right cerebellum. Mary Lee was lovingly cared for in her home during her final months by her daughter. At Mary Lee's request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Mrs. Metzger was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Los Angeles. She graduated from Glendale High School in 1938. In 1945 she married Karl Metzger and together they raised four sons and a daughter, Joe, Bill, Tom, Tina and David. In 1961, the Metzger family moved to San Clemente, where Mary Lee was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Brownie Troop Leader and room mother at Las Palmas Grammar School. She was the business secretary and answered the phones for Karl Metzger Plumbing and Heating. Mary Lee shared her life-long love of the beach with her family. During the early 1960*s she was known to drive the coast from surf spot to surf spot in her 1951 Ford Country Squire "woodie" station wagon, filled with rambunctious kids and their longboards, to check out the waves for the best break. Mary Lee and Karl retired to Morro Bay in 1978 and together they enjoyed the fun of being grandparents and many happy years golfing on the Central Coast. Mary Lee twice recorded a hole-in-one at Laguna Lake Golf Course. She was a member of Morro Bay Women*s Golf Club, Dairy Creek Women*s Golf Club, and Laguna Lake Ladies Golf Club. After her husband passed away, "Maui Lee" traveled extensively around the world to exotic destinations with her daughter, granddaughters, golfing buddies, and Aussie friends. Mary Lee had a vibrant zest for life, a warm acceptance of all people, and loved her family, the beach, golfing, traveling and the sun. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and golfing buddies. Mary Lee is survived by her children, Joe Metzger of Kalaheo, Kauai; Bill Metzger and wife, Karen of San Clemente; Tom Metzger and wife, Nancy of San Clemente; Tina Metzger of Los Osos; David Metzger of San Clemente; brother, Bill and wife, Diane of Newport Beach; sister, Rose and husband Jimmy, of Glendale; grandchildren, Jena; Anna; Kate; Brandon; Nina; Karl; Arik; Anjelica; and great-grandchild, Zoe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Metzger in 1988; and granddaughter, Brianna Metzger in 1989. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, 277 South St., Suite R, San Luis Obispo, 93401, or charity of choice.
