Mary Cox Pippin BRISTOL, Va. Mary Elizabeth Cox Pippin, age 96, died May 31, 2013, at her residence. She was born July 5, 1916, at Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Va. She was the daughter of the late Maude Alley and Ezra B. Cox. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Mary Ellen Pippin, who died at birth; her brother, E.B. Cox Jr. and his wife, Dorothy; and by one sister, Willie Frances Rich and husband, Charles H. Rich. Mary was educated at Virginia High School, Virginia Intermont College, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and Northwestern University, Evangton, Ill., where she received a B.S. degree in social work. Graduate studies were at Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University. She was the widow of Lt. Colonel Harmon L. Pippin Jr. During their 54 years of marriage, they lived in various Army posts including a year in Guam, Mariana Islands, one year in Heidelberg, Germany, and two years in Orleans, France, where she served as president of the Transportation Corps Women's Club. After Colonel Pippin's retirement, they returned to Bristol, their home town, where they have lived since 1975. She was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church but attended St. Anne's Catholic Church with her husband. In his memory she gave the carillon bells now used daily at St. Anne's. She was a member of the Southwest Virginia Historical Society, the Washington County Virginia Historical Society, the Holston Territory Genealogical Society of Bristol, and the Army Transportation Corps Museum Foundation at Fort Eustis, Va. Mrs. Pippin is survived by one sister, Ruth Keller and husband, Fred Keller, of Bristol, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday , June 4 , 2013, in Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with her nephew the Rev. Dr. John F. Keller officiating. There will be no viewing at the funeral home except by family members, but those who desire may visit at Ruth Keller's home at any time. If desired, memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of your choice. The family gives special thanks to her wonderful caregivers, Tammy Carrier, Brenda Malone and Jeneine Castle.
