Hi Dan, You've been on our minds and in our prayers lately. We are so very sorry we could not attend the Eugene memorial service for Mary. We were out of town that week. We both love these pictures and the obituary about Mary. She was a truly amazing lady. Such a lover of Jesus, her family and her community of friends known and new..
Even if you don't feel it some days, know that your Savior is by your side during these difficult days. Your friends are near, too. Call if you need anything or just want to talk....even if it's just Duck Talk!
Prayers and Hugs, Colby and Terry Sheldon

Dear Dan and family,
My thoughts will be with you and Mary on July 6 as you honor the life of this extraordinary woman at the memorial service. I am so sorry I can't be there in person. My memories of Mary are of a beautiful and vivacious woman, deeply kind, talented, with an indomitable zest for life. I loved it when she came over to me at our auction fundraiser and danced and sang along with the Latin American songs that were playing, with a playful, sexy, joyful smile. I will treasure the gorgeous flame-red shawl she took off her shoulders and gave to me. I will miss her radiant face as she sang in the Eugene Concert Choir. I was amazed at her intrepid spirit as she trudged along over rocky cobblestones and braved the heat throughout the Italy tour. Mary was not one to miss out on a minute of what life had to offer. Leaving us all, this is too soon. But we know that she lived a glorious and abundant life. Thank you for sending me the recording of Mary singing "In the Fold of the Lord" in a youthful, strong, soaring and determined voice. It was unmistakably Mary. As I have shared with you, Dan, it was clear to the world that you and Mary were a couple blessed with an epic love. The depth of loss is proportional to the enormity of the beauty the two of you shared. I recently heard a song by Paul McCartney that I hadn't been familiar with. It is called "My Valentine." As I listened, tears sprang to my eyes and I couldn't help but think of you and Mary. The song on youtube, my gift to you: https://youtu.be/9HOhVeXsZkM
I know that Mary was always the sunshine in your life, Dan. With heartfelt sympathy to you and your family, wishing you a warm, meaningful, and memorable tribute to beautiful Mary.

Dan
We just heard the news about your loss. Can not even imagine the pain and grief you are all going through. Mary gave me several prophetic words at P&P in SM that brought me hope and one came to pass. She was so full of the Lord's light and hope and made a difference.
Praying for you!

I will always remember Mary as a sweet, talented, very fun! person. We met in Eugene concert choir and sat by each other many times during rehearsals. we had such fun together touring in Italy and Croatia. We would often get the giggles during rehearsals. I will always remember Mary as such a dear friend. Mary will be so greatly missed.

When I think of Mary, I think of COLOR! She was one of God's most colorful roses and I know you will miss her so much. Yet the colors of her life remain to remind us of the goodness of God and the goodness of life. Hugs of prayer to you all, her dear ones.

Impressions last forever. The first one I had of Mary was one of joy, radiance, and beauty. It did not take long to realize that she was every one these things and more. I knew her for a brief moment, but she has impacted me for the rest of my life. I know that she is no longer with us physically, but she lives in everyday through her music, her memories, and her spirit. Está con Dios y con nosotros para siempre.

Mary was with us for far too short a time. I remember the first time I saw her and Dan in the congregation. She was so full of love and worship and when she was singing hymns her face was alight. I was so happy to see that she joined our choir. Not only did she have a beautiful soprano voice but now Katie Beth had someone to harmonize with! Mary moved into all of our hearts very quickly. She had a smile and a hug for everyone and was ready to extend a loving word to anyone and everyone. I still see her face and smile in my mind's eye and will hold onto it. We were blessed to have her as a part of our choir family and miss her very much. Sherry Rasmus, Austin, TX

My Sweet and Special sister-in-law Mary,
I remember the first time I met you, when Al brought me up to North Carolina to meet his family. Your loving kindness, beauty and grace made a big impression on me as a young girl. I'll always treasure the special times we've spent together and our phone conversations praying for each other. You were a singing angel here on earth and now in heaven with our dear Lois and Aunt June. I can hear Aunt June playing the piano now as you and Lois are singing those great songs of faith. I love and miss you but know one day we'll see each other again. When we all get to heaven what a day of rejoicing that will be. When we all see Jesus we'll sing and shout the victory!! Dan, Gracia, Ryan & Cano family you're in my prayers as you prepare to put Mary to rest today. May the joining together of family and friends to honor her be of great comfort to you.
I love you all!

Dan, I am so sad your retirement adventure was abruptly interrupted by this accident. I will always remember the way the two of you embraced this new season of your life like it was your first. Mary was a beautiful soul. I pray that you will find deep comfort and abiding peace in Christ as each day unfolds. Much love to you and your family!

Mary, Emma and I worked together in the district office for bilingual programs in Oakland CA
We bonded closely through our work and became like family, celebrating Christmas parties, birthdays with our children
We would visit each other often and she would prepare lavish luncheons with seasonal themes.
Mary made us laugh so much and cry over the beauty of the songs she would compose spontaneously singing and playing the piano. When in need we prayed together with so much fervor that I knew God heard us.
Maria was like a sister who provided comfort, hope and affection. She is part of my heart
As is Dan, Gracia and Ryan. May God comfort and bless the Rothwell family as well as the Cano's. Love, Yolanda and son,
Mario

Mary was in her own word, "tenaz", tenacious. We didn't know her very long in our SHPC choir, but we loved having her with us in those few short months. Thank you, Mary, for sharing your beautiful voice with us. Dan, Gracia and Ryan, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that your new Church Family is here for you in any way we can help. Yours in Christ, Jody Barrett

By Biblical category, our sweet Mary was a "shower of mercy, with cheerfulness." Romans 12:8, which exhibited itself through her kindness and gentleness, service and love towards all of us who knew her. How we will miss her!
And so, dear Mary, farewell for now, until we shall meet again in that land where there is "no night, for the Lamb is the light" and we shall forever be together with the Lord!
With much love,

I knew Mary for a short time given her long and productive life. Her obituary listing all her many accomplishments is extraordinary. I will remember her for her warm laugh, her smile, her hugs and her love of music and of performing. She will be missed but the memory of the special qualities that made her the woman she was will never be forgotten by those who were lucky enough to have had her in their lives. God Bless, Mary, and to your family too. Jennifer McConochie

Our sweet angel is singing before the Throne of God. She scattered joy where ever she walked. She was a dear, loyal friend to so many. And many came to know our Lord and Savior because of her. Heaven rejoices at her presence. We will miss her so very much. All of our love, Bob and Annette

Dear Dan,
Mary was a truly unique person whose life deeply touched all who knew and loved her. Not only was she a strong Christian woman and remarkable leader, but a very warm-hearted, truly unforgettable friend. We have very fond memories of our many years spent worshipping and serving together at FPCSM, of gatherings in your home, and especially of our travels together in Turkey and Greece. Mary's wonderful sense of humor, her amazing singing voice and her energetic sense of adventure (and love of shopping wherever she went!) could energize any group of weary pilgrims. Her colorful style, infectious laugh, warm and ever welcoming way, drew people to her wherever she went. Her presence could light up a bus, as well as a sanctuary or a room!
Our hearts are broken by the news of her tragic accident but we rest in the reality that she is now forever safe with our Lord.
Our love and prayers are with you and Ryan and Gracia and the entire family at this time of profound loss.
Yours in Christ,
Roberta & Mike

Dear Dan, Gracia,Ryan,and Cano family,
Our hearts are broken because we cannot be with sweet, kind Mary here on earth. We will cherish the times we had together, the phone calls and texts. Always will have fond memories of the wonderful time visiting with Mary in San Francisco. We were so happy that she always kept in touch with family. How we are so very grateful Mary contacted us and we saw her for lunch in March on the way back from Fort Sam. The place where your love story started Dan. How we laughed when we asked how long did you all date before you married ? Your reply was you had asked Mary when you first started dating what her future plans were? Mary's response was...to be Mrs. Dan Rothwell! What a blessing you received to be together with her 47 years. We had such a wonderful fun time that afternoon. Still can see her in her rhinestone cowgirl hat... always a Texan! She was so thoughtful and even brought us souvenirs that we will treasure.
We hope you will be comforted knowing that she is in the presence of our Lord and Savior. Mary is a great example of what a Christian woman should be. Her parents and ours are enjoying her beautiful voice singing to them now. We are praying for God to give you strength every day. Mary is a special angel we are blessed to have in our family. Someday we will all be together.

Nancy and I first met Mary and Dan as new members of our church, Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Austin. One morning Mary walked up to our pianist who was playing a hymn prior to the service. Mary started singing quietly. I was touched by her lovely voice so I said "Why don't you sing with us in the choir?" Mary replied "Of course I will." She sang with us for too few weeks and on the last Sunday before she and Dan left for their trip, Mary asked to sing a solo. It was a beautiful parting gift to the choir and all who heard her voice. We will surely miss her.

A friend for all eternity, that was Mary. Oh how I will miss hearing her voice and just picking up the phone to say "hi girl". Thankful for the time that God has lent her to us. John and I will always treasure that wonderful weekend we had together in Oregon last July . Memories help us in these sorrowful times. Praying for Dan and family as they grieve the loss of beloved wife, mom, sister, auntie and friend.

To the Rothwell family, words can't express the loss of a dearly beloved one. I have lovely memories as we grew up in San Juan and visited a few weeks ago. She touched everyone in a very special way. She will be missed but showed us and taught us alot. The last time I heard her sing was at Sonny and Belia anniversary. The joy as she sang was so powerful joined by her sisters and brother. She used her talent to connect with everyone. Continuing to pray for the family.

There's Something about Mary
There have been but a handful of people who have walked this earth that when I met them or have spent a considerable amount of time with them you begin to sense you are in the presence of a certain kind of uniqueness that transcends the word special. Mary was one of those people! Mary was many things in one person: a fantastic wife, a great and caring mother, a beautiful Christian, loyal friend, gifted with many talents such as singer, cook, and homemaker. Mary was always fun to be around, always positive and wonderful sense of humor, humble servant, warrior, devoted, and the list goes on and wonderfully on....
So I set about the joyful task of trying to come up with the exact word which would perfectly match who she was in the essence of her being! Did I mention I
like difficult challenges? All of the quite adequate descriptions previously mentioned seemed only to divide Mary into compartments. My desire was something more unifying and all-encompassing. Because there's something about Mary!
The first word which came to mind was stellar! That's a pretty big word...not many in this world would be considered stellar! It kind of makes one think of the universe, how expansive and divine it ismuch like Mary's heart!
Then another word came to mind, loving! Mary had a deep deep love for everyone so special. She treated each one of us with a love especially tailored
for our needs, so down to earth and full of joy! And after thinking a while, I still wondered if either of those words adequately summed up Mary's essence deep down inside. They are pretty darn grand and they do reflect the grandeur of much of who she is-.
Finally, the word came to me, angelic! That was it! Say no morel What a treasure trove of blessed memories we will always cherish of Mary!
She will never die...eternal life is hers as she lives forevermore in the arms of Jesus and in our own hearts! Thank God for he is good! Thank God for Mary! !
There is just something about her! My dear sister-in-law I love you!

Dearest Family and Friends of Maria,
My deepest and most sincere condolences for the loss of a most loving and inspirational womanmy dear friend Maria. I know that Maria was a gift of God for us to love, to take care of and respect as she brought joy to everyone around her.
My name is Emma Chavez-Roos and I first met Mary about forty years ago while we were both interviewing for jobs as teachers with the Oakland Unified School District. As I was waiting my turn to be interviewed, Maria came inlooking stunning in her high heels, well-dressed, long dark hair; and with great enthusiasm, holding two white cardboards with colorful music notes and drawings. As I held my two small pieces of cardboard with the vowels and small drawings, I thought there goes my jobshe will for sure get hired! Luckily for both of us, we were both hired as teachers. Our friendship and our adventures began that day. We worked together for many years as educators. Aside from our day-to-day teaching job, we also organized workshops for parents and cultural workshops at the school for Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos; and most importantly, we focused on instruction for bilingual education. We worked very hard, but working together made our jobs easier. We had each other as co-workers, as Friends, as Sisters. Together we advocated for students' and parents' rights in education for many years. Nothing could stop uswe made a great team. Then Maria left to Oregon, but we kept in touch as good friends do. I always told her, near or far, you'll always be in my heart.
We are here now to say farewell to our beloved Mary. We loved her very much, and she will always hold a very special place in our lives and in our hearts. Her dedication to her family as a wife, a mother and a friend, her dedication as a community leader and her love for educating children (the future of our country) will never be forgotten. Maria's legacy extends beyond what our eyes can see.
Today our tears are tears of love; tears of gratitude to God for allowing us to create unforgettable memories at her side. Maria has taken the road to heaven, where in the form of an angel, she will take care of everyone that she loved on Earth. Her wings extend into eternity and she now stands next to her creator.
I pray to God to comfort and protect Daniel, Gracia, Ryan, and other family members and friends from the pain of losing our dearest Maria. Today there is an angel in your family, in your heart, in your faith, in your hope-her name is Maria. When God calls you to travel in that same direction, Mary will greet you with a smile and will assure you that there is eternal happiness in Heaven.
As for me, near or far, Maria will always be in my heart!
Carinosamente,
Emma Chavez-Roos and Peter Roos

There really are no words. Mary was a beautiful daughter of The King. She always made you feel that you were special to her with her true heart of Jesus that showed from within her. We still miss you all @FPCSM. To know Mary was/is to love her. She will be missed but we will see her again. She is singing for, and being held in the arms of Jesus now. Will remember her angelic voice and her beautiful person. May The Lord comfort you all. Prayers for you all also. God bless. In Love, Heidi.

Just as we all carry the honor of welcoming new life into our families, we must also bear the loss of life, although we may not have seen them in years, they carry no less than the highest of esteem, the deepest love and admiration from Melody Torres and i.
My Aunt Mary Cano-Rothwell - nothing less than the most beautiful of souls, gifted with an angelic voice, a musician, piano player, endowed with the kind of understanding and compassion that befits a true matriarch- has passed away, an unfortunate accident has claimed her. i spent many many hours pondering the few conversations we had over the past cpl years, and i say:Mary is prominent , very prominent in my heart and always will be, as there are few spaces that have been earned within me, for my heart measures the true kindness, forgiveness and the merciful actions of another as the criterion to be considered an icon within my world. Be that as it may, she lives on, her song, her sweet and kind voice to always be heard in my mind. Her compassion is my virtue, her consistent loving approach, most welcome wherever she may dwell.
Dan Rothwell, Princess Grace,Ryan Rothwell i am very happy for you because you have her forever as your mom and wife and i cannot think of a greater honor than to be associated to her thusly. it is my privilege to also be associated to her forever. Mary holds one of the few places within my heart, among the highest of living souls that i truly admire and adore, with love everlasting, her memory is now a constant reminder that there is good in this world, an inspiration to continue on, when sometimes life could cause one to feel less than that. She lives on within us..I am torn to pieces today and i will not heal nor do i want to heal, this wound I carry with me until i am no more.. Fortunate I am because she will always be my aunt. Mary is someone that I love as much as a person could love another.. peace..

Words can never express our deepest sympathies in the passing of our BELOVED and PRECIOUS MARY. Mary served our LORD AND SAVIOR with her beautiful GOD given talent. MARY now sings with the choir of Angels forever. We will pray for you all continuously. That was our PRECIOUS MARY always being there to help others and putting their needs before her own. One can never say enough beautiful words for a soul that was taken too soon. We will always hold her in our heart and will miss her forever until we meet again one day. May God comfort and strengthen you all in the days to come and please reach out to us if you need prayer, or just to chat. We love you and pray God's blessing upon you all now and in days ahead. There are no words to describe the grief we feel at Mary's passing. Dan, we are here for you and holding you up in fervent prayer. While we know Mary has been welcomed home by our Father, we will miss her here while we await our turn to go home. She was and continues to be a powerful inspiration of love and hope to the Barrera children. I am just very thankful that I was given the opportunity to reconnect with her and express my gratitude and love for her during our most recent visits. Mary, enjoy that marvelous place that God so lovingly prepared for you. Sing your beautiful melody in praise offering to our Lord and Savior. Rest well sweet daughter of God.
