SISTER MARY LOUISE (SISTER MARY URBAN)
A Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 71 years, died at the Sisters of Mercy infirmary on September 15, 2015. Born in Trafford, PA, she was 90 years old. Daughter of Otto and Anna (Bender) Schendel, Sister Mary Louise entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Regis Parish in Trafford in 1944, and made final vows in 1950. Sister Mary Louise received a B.A. degree in Art from Carlow College (now Carlow University) and a M.Ed. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. She taught in area Catholic schools including St. Paul Orphanage, Immaculate Conception in Washington, PA, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Peter Grade School and Domenec High School, North Side and St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Pleasant Hills where she also served as principal. When Domenec High School closed in 1973, Sister Mary Louise became an assistant professor of mathematics at Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). Although she chose to teach both credit and remedial courses, she had a special interest in remedial work, and helping students to understand what they needed. She also coauthored a text for remedial students entitled Core Mathematics, published in 1980. She retired in 1995, as professor emerita. She quoted, "I enjoyed teaching at CCAC; it was fun. It was truly the work of Mercy." Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gregory, Fr. Alfred (Regis), Urban, Leo, Joseph and Alfred Schendel; and sisters, Rosamond Schendel and Virginia Brawley. Sister Mary Louise is survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schendel in NC; and several nieces and nephews in California. Friends will be received Sunday, September 20, 2015, from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 21, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier's Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or the Carlow University Scholarship Fund.
