SOUTH BEND - Born and raised in South Bend, Mary graduated from South Bend Central High School and DePauw University in Greencastle, IN and married Jerome F. Shandy in 1947. They moved to Costa Mesa, CA in 1976. Mary was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was a long time teacher at Stanley Clark School in South Bend and at Park Private Day School in Costa Mesa until she retired. She carried her love of teaching into her volunteer activities as a naturalist at Sea and Sage Audubon in Irvine, CA and the Cetacean Society, Newport Beach, CA, giving whale watch tours to schools.
Mary was active in the Newport Beach Women's Golf Association, the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club and poker at the Oasis Senior Center.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jerome F. Shandy. She is survived by her two children, Susan Fitzwilson and Ross Shandy of Evergreen, CO; granddaughter, Robin Guerra (Jon); twin great-grandsons, Wyatt and Weston of McKinney, TX; brother, Rawson H. Murdock (Christine) of South Bend, and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be Sept. 10 at 10 am at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, CA. Donations may be made in Mary's name to Stanley Clark School, 3123 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46614.

I have so many happy memories of Mary from our days together at DePauw University. For the past few years we have stayed close through phone calls and I will truly miss her. My condolences to her family.
