DURHAM, N.C. — Mrs. Mary H. Parks Uthe, age 95, died Saturday evening, Jan. 5, 2008, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center.She was born August 17, 1912, in Stoneboro, Pa., the daughter of the late Thomas M. and Mary Hassey Parks. She was educated at Ashtabula High School, Ashtabula, Ohio, and graduated from Kent State University in 1933. She attended classes at Edinboro State Teachers College and Thiel College in Greenville, Pa.Mrs. Uthe was an elementary teacher in the Ashtabula public schools for 26 years, retiring in 1977.She was a member of the Ohio Education Association, the Ashtabula Area Association and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Uthe relocated to Durham in 1989. Once in Durham, she became a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, serving on the welcoming committee. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the 50+ group and the Ceramic Guild. Mrs. Uthe is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Good of San Jose, Calif.; sons, Thomas C. Uthe of Mechanicsville, Va., and Dr. William F. Uthe of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sister, Mercedes Kandel of Louisville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Mrs. Uthe was preceded in death by her husband, Chester F. Uthe, and her brother, Thomas Parks.A Mass to celebrate Mary’s life will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ashtabula, Ohio, with Father Philip Miller as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Edgewood Cemetery.The family will receive visitors Thursday evening, Jan. 10, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ashtabula Home of the FLEMING and BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, INC., 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.HOWERTON AND BRYAN FUNERAL HOME of Durham, N.C., is handling local arrangements.
